American Christian in Interfaith Love with an Indian Hindu

I am a non-Brahman/ non-hindu. I just started dating a brahmin hindu guy. He lives in India and I live in America. One of my friends keep telling me he is probably using me to say he has an American girlfriend and just going to hurt me. I don’t agree with my friend. What do you think? He says he want’s to get married in 2 years because his parents will likely disown him. And he wants to have his career portfolio finished (2 years to finish the portfolio) As far as I know his parents don’t know about me yet. What are the chances we can work everything out and get married? And what advice would you give him on how to break the news to his parents?

We met online. We are planning for me to visit in 3-4 months… I am born and raised American. I am also from a Christian home. Sorry I should have explained more… -Emily

I am from a Christian home. At this point I don’t consider myself a Christian. For many reasons I won’t bore yiu with… I was baptized when I was a teen. I do not believe being baptized is a must for our children. I find alot of the Indian and hindu culture fascinating… I have read alot about it and also my boyfriend has given me alot of information. I do understand the cultural and religious differences and I am prepared for that if need be. I agree. I feel like we need to meet to really know each other. -Emily

    Hi there
I’m a christian girl in love with an Hindu boy we live in UK, I’m 20.
We talked about our potential future wedding bcz we want to do so later on.
But pb is that I don’t want hindu ceremony and he’s fine with it if we don’t do either christian or hindu ceremony.
I still want a christian wedding atleast a pastor praying for us, we wait to speak to our respective parents.
I feel guilty to marry not in front of god.

I DON’T THINK THERE WILL BE SOME MAJOR PROBLEMS WITH YOU…SINCE I KNOW THESE BRAHMINS VERY WELL…(MY GRANDMOTHER WAS A BRAHMIN & DOCTOR AND SHE HAD MARRIED MY GRANDFATHER ALSO A DOCTOR AROUND 100 YEARS AGO, ALTHOUGH THEY ARE VERY ORTHODOX BUT THEY ARE ALSO VERY MODERN AND LIBERALS…SO CHEER UP…BUT AS I HAVE SOME KNOWLEDGE ABOUT VEDIC ASTROLOGY ALL I CAN SAY FOR ANY INTER-RELIGION MARRIAGE, THE MOST IMPORTANT PART IS PLAYED BY RAHU..SO HAVE YOUR HOROSCOPE CHECKED WITH A VEDIC ASTROLOGER IN YOUR AREA AND DO SOME REMEDY OF RAHU……CHEERS

Hinduism (like Judaism) is not a proselytizing faith. The “conversion business” is not a fundamental part of Hinduism. Hindus don’t carry the superstition that if they covert someone, they will achieve moksha/heaven/saved. For these reasons, , Hindus (and Jews) are not running around (like Christians and Muslims) to convert others. In this respect, you are safe here. Even after marriage, if you wish to go visit church once a while or have Jesus’ photo in a Hindu home, Hindus (most times) wouldn’t have problem with it.

For now, you have to meet him and his parents and learn of cultural differences. In America, a couple is considered an independent entity while in Indian culture (all faiths), the bride/wife is suppose to merge into the husband/husband’s parents’ home and culture. If you do, rest will go fine. A secret of managing this cultural issue is to work outside home (even if in India). By working/ having a job, you get freedom from home. Further, money brings respect! Cultural issues will be even minimal if he settles in America. In any marriage, cultural issues are at worst at about 2 years into the marriage, but later (if marriage survives) the couple finds tolerable adjustments.

We are glad of help. Our interest is not if you marry to this guy or not, but wish to see you happy in what ever your decision.

We do not know your individual situation. There could be many issues to tackle (it is true in any marriage). However, always think rationally and critically, rather by being blind in love. Get back to us for any guidance when you decide to move forward/backward. Best wishes.

    Hi Emily,
You said you are from Christian faith. Do you consider yourself as a “Christian”? Are you baptized? Do you believe your children must be baptized Christians only or you don’t really care? Please let us know about this critical point.

Remember, there could religious and cultural issues/differences. You are born and raised in America, while he is from India. Are you going to adapt to Indian culture and family system? If you have to go and be a part of his joint Brahmin family, are you going to be comfortable? We are glad you are planning to meet in person, that is the best way to find truth. Best wishes.
