Dear Geet,

Interfaith marriages are always difficult. Even if the guy were a Hindu, still parents would have concern with your love-marriage. Generally parents wish for an arrange marriage.

Hindus and Sikhs are from Dharmic faith tradition and have many common values. However, these two are separate religions and have their own ways of praying to God. There are many other cultural differences too. You need to read on these and understand what you are getting into.

One main question in any interfaith marriage is what will be the faith of your children? Are they going to have a Sikh names or Hindu names? Are they allowed to visit Gurudwara and Hindu temples? Will they celebrate both religious holidays? Do Sikh family going to have problem if you wish to have a Hindu mandir in your own married home? Are they okay you performing pooja to Hindu deities and also pray to Sikh gurus?

Do not listen to what that guy says, instead, go meet his family and find out, slowly and slowly, answers to above questions.

To your parents, slowly introduce him as just a friend. Once they know the person, it will make it lots easy for you to convince them (still never going to be easy).

Think rationally and practically, not emotionally and in blind love. If you see a major issue in your relationship, be ready to pull the plug (meaning ending the relationship). For now, do not commit anything. It may take two years to convince two sets of parents, so get ready.

Keep in touch with us right here. Best wishes. -Admin
