My childhood was not much different from that of other girls of my generation. Like other girls of a middle-class family, I was sent to a coeducational school until I reached the age of seven. When eight, I had to go to a girls’ school. From 6th to 10th grades, coeducational schools were not open to girls. After 10th grade, I went to a girls’ college. My father disapproved of my going to a coeducational college where boys were, but he had no alternative when he decided that I should study medical science. My father, I should add, was different from other fathers.
Girls frequently dropped out of school when they were fifteen or sixteen, ages at which they often were given into marriage by their parents. Few girls had a chance to continue their studies, for after an arranged marriage they were not allowed to continue studying in school or college or university nor could they take a job. They became totally dependent upon their husbands, in other words.
It was usual for us children, in the early morning, to read the Koran in Arabic, and like all other children in Bangladesh I did this. But I found myself asking questions. I wanted to know what I was reading, what the meaning of the Koranic verses was. Our language is Bengali, not Arabic, and it was impossible to know the meaning of the verses that we read. We just read, that’s all. When I asked Mother to tell me the meaning of what I was reading, she explained that the meaning is not important, that what is important is that Allah will be happy that I am reading the Koran in its original language.
When I was thirteen or fourteen, however, I found a book that translated the Koran into Bengali. To my surprise, I found Allah saying that men are superior, that women are inferior. Men can have four wives. Men can divorce their wives any time they want. Men are allowed to beat women. Women are not allowed to give testimony in some legal cases. Women are not allowed to inherit the property of their father equally with their brothers. Women are supposed to wear veils.
Islam does not consider woman a separate human being. Man was the original creation and womankind was created secondarily for the pleasure of man. Islam consider a woman as a slave or sexual object, nothing more. Women’s role is to stay at home and to obey her husband, for this is her religious duty. Women are considered weak, so they should be taken care of, their body and mind, their desire and wishes, their rights and freedom must be controlled by men. Islam treats women intellectually, morally and physically inferior. In marriage, Islam protects the rights of men and men only. Once the marriage is consummated, women have no rights whatsoever in this field. The Koran gave total freedom to men saying ’ Your women are as your field, go unto them as you will ( 2.223)’
Women are told to run to their husbands wherever they are, whatever they do. It is their duty. The hadith says that two prayers that never reach the heavens are 1. those of the escaping slaves and 2. those of the reluctant woman who frustrates her husband at night.
Islam considers women psychologically inferior. Women’s testimony is not allowed in cases of marriage, divorce, and hudud. Hudud are the punishment of Islamic law for adultery, fornication, adultery against a married person, apostasy, theft, robbery, and so forth. If any woman is raped, she has to produce four male witnesses to the court. If she cannot, there is no charge against the rapist. In Islamic law, the testimony of two women is worth that of one man. In the case in which a man suspects his wife of adultery or denies the legitimacy of the offspring, his testimony is worth that of four witnesses. A woman does not have the right to charge her husband in a similar manner.
Women are not allowed to inherit the property equally with their brothers. In the case of inheritance, Allah says, a male shall inherit twice as much as a female( 4.11-12)
And after all the rights and freedom, after getting all the sexual pleasure and pleasure of being the master, Allah will reward the men with wine, food, and seventy two virgins in Paradise, including their wives of the earth. Allah said, Eat and drink happily, in return for your works. They relax on luxurious furnishings, and we match them with beautiful virgins( 52.19-20).near them, shall be blushing virgins with large beautiful eyes who will be like hidden pearls. ( 37.48-49)
And what is the reward for the pious woman? Nothing. Nothing but the same old husband, the same man who caused her suffering while they were on earth.
I was a student of science, so it was hard to accept that the sun moves around the earth, that the moon has its own light, and that the purpose of mountains is to support the earth so it will not fall down somewhere. I came to suspect that the Qur’an was not written by Allah but, rather, by some selfish greedy man who wanted only his own comfort. Then I read the Hadith, the words of Muhammad. I found different events of Prophet Muhammad’s life in which, when he had problems, Allah solved them right away. For example, he was sexually aroused by seeing his daughter-in-law, so Allah sent him a message saying he could marry her because his son was adopted and not a real son, so the marriage was therefore justified. Further, he created a new rule, that Muslims would not be allowed to adopt any child. Muhammad married thirteen times, one of his brides being six-year-old Ayesha. Allah, he said, told him that he was allowed to enjoy his wives, his female slaves and all the captive women he had . He put Ayesha in a veil because he was jealous and did not want his friends looking admiringly at her. Allah, he said, told his friends that they should not go to the Prophet’s house any time they want but if they go, they should not look at any of his wives or ask any of them for something. He was so jealous that he introduced the veil for his wives and, ultimately, for all Muslim women. Even though widow-marriage was legal, he made it illegal for men to marry any of his own wives when he himself died. It became clear to me that Muhammad had written the Koran for his own interest, for his own comfort, for his own fun. So I stopped believing in Islam. When I studied other religions, I found they, too, oppressed women. When I stopped practicing religion and made some offensive comments about religion to my mother, she became both nervous and furious, sure that I would go to Hell, and she started praying for me.
My father, a physician, had a scientific outlook but was very domineering. He did not allow me the freedom to play, to go outside, to meet friends, to go to the cinema or theatre, or to read any book that was not in a syllabus. He wanted me to earn a medical degree so he could say that one of his children followed his path. On the one hand, he wanted me to be independent, but on the other hand he wanted to find a good match for me inasmuch as educated men often desire an educated wife.
As I grew up, I kept observing the condition of women in our society. My mother, for example, was a perfect example of a woman oppressed. She had been given into marriage when she was but a child, she was a good student in school, but she was not allowed to continue her studies. My grandfather and my father did not want her to study, for what they wanted was for her to be a good housewife, a good mother, a good caretaker. She was unhappy from the first day of the marriage. My father never loved her, he was promiscuous, and she knew that he had affairs with other women. In frustration, she sought refuge in religion. Unloved and not respected by her husband, she became religious. As a result, I came to think that this was foolish and unworthy of a mother. Although I was supposed to respect both my parents, I could not. I could not respect my father’s being such a cruel and brutal person. Throughout my life, he beat me, even when I was thirty years old! He loved to beat children, his theory being that unless children were beaten they would become spoiled. He had come from an illiterate, poor, farm family, yet had succeeded in becoming a medical doctor.
In our house, I grew up with much fear, having to keep inside my heart all my desire for freedom and curiosity for the outside world. I was not allowed to step outside the house except to go to my school or college. As a result, I developed a passion for reading books, fiction, poetry, essays, anything. But I had to hide the books from my parents. And I had another passion: to write poetry.
Growing up, I naturally had the belief that girls surely must be inferior to boys, for boys could play in a big field whereas girls had to play with their dolls in a corner of the house. My brothers could go anywhere they wanted, could watch any games, could play anything they wanted to play. I could not. My sister could not. I was told that girls were not made for such, that their role was to stay home, learn how to cook, make beds, clean the house. My mother was not the only woman who was oppressed, for I saw my aunts, my neighbors, and other acquaintances who were playing the same roles, that of being oppressed. In our minds, torture of women was not oppression but, rather, was tradition. We become accustomed to tradition. As I grew, I realized that I was a part of the tradition but also that I was being oppressed the same as my female classmates and, later, my female patients. Whether they were poor or rich, beautiful or ugly, had blue or black or brown eyes, had white, black or brown skin, were unmarried or married, illiterate or literate, clever or stupid, all were oppressed. Everywhere women were oppressed. And all because of male-devised patriarchy, religion, tradition, culture, and customs.
Nobody told me to protest, but I developed a strong feeling that it was important to fight against oppression. Nobody asked me to shed a tear, but I did. When I started writing prose that was published weekly in the newspapers, I found my protests got the attention of readers, that people either hated me or they loved me. I became accustomed to receiving extreme hate and extreme love letters. One by one, my books got published. Not only publishers but also newspaper editors wanted me to write. With perseverance, I became a best-selling author.
However, those who hated what I wrote developed demonstrations against me, and people began protesting by marching through the streets. In 1992 at a national book fair, my books were publicly burned, and I was thrown out of the event. A ”Smash Taslima Committee” commenced, and I was not allowed to visit the book fair any more because the fair’s leaders said my books were causing the problem. In 1993 I returned, but this time the fundamentalists and an angry mob assaulted me publicly, breaking into the bookshop where my books were kept. I may have received the biggest literary award, but at the same time I received the biggest hate campaign ever. The government then confiscated my passport, asking me not to write any more if I hoped to keep my job as a medical doctor in a public hospital. In protest, I quit the job. My passport, however, was not returned until a year later when a human rights campaign outside Bangladesh’s borders successfully pressured the government.
I continued writing. In my poetry, prose, and essays, novels I have defended women and the minority community that is being oppressed. I cried loudly for equality and justice, justice for all people whatever their religion or gender. I spoke loudly upon behalf of secularism. I spoke against any religious laws in which women are oppressed. My book was banned by the government.
Women continue to be flogged, they are stoned to death. Women are raped, are accused of allowing the rape, and the rapists are set free. Women have been suffering from trafficking, from slavery, from all sorts of discrimination. Men have thrown acid on women’s faces and walked away as happy men. Women are not considered as human beings, not by religion, not by so-called tradition. For a couple, the most unwanted thing is a female baby. If a female baby is born, either the wife gets a divorce for her crime of having given birth of a female or the wife must spend her life with disgrace. By writing books, I wanted to do something constructive, I wanted to help women understand that they are oppressed but do not need to be. I wanted to encourage them to fight for their rights and freedom. My voice, however, gave women the chance to think differently. That, however, did not make the religionists or the male chauvinists happy. As a result, the fundamentalists took the stand of absolutely not tolerating any of my views. They objected to a woman’s breaking the chains and becoming free, and they could not tolerate my saying that the Qur’an is out of place, out of time, and that secular law with a uniform civil code for women is a necessity. Extremists broke into newspapers’ offices, sued my editors, publishers, and me. They demanded my execution by hanging. Hundreds of thousands people were on the street. They called a general strike all over the country, insisting that I be killed. The government, instead of taking action against them, took action against me. They filed a case against me, charging that I had hurt the religious feelings of the people. I had no other alternative but to go into hiding. While in hiding, I was fortunate in receiving the support of the western democratic governments, feminists, and human rights organizations. They literally helped to save my life. Actually I thought it would be killed, for daily I saw mobs of people demanding my death. Police looked everywhere for me, knowing that the fundamentalists wanted me dead. Anyway, I survived. The government threw me out of the country. Since then, I have been trying to go back to my country, but it is impossible. I am not allowed to go back to my country.
Meanwhile, three of my books are banned in Bangladesh. I have written twenty-four books, and cases have been filed against me in order to ban the other books. Recently, a Bangladesh court sentenced me to one year in prison for having written what I did. Everything is because of religion. Because of religion, there is bloodshed, bloodshed everywhere. Because of religion there is hatred among people. Because of religion there is ignorance all over the world. Because of religion there is illiteracy, there is poverty. Because of religion there are injustices and inequalities. Because of religion millions of women have been suffering, they are flogged, they are burned, they are stoned to death. Because of religion, my books are burned and banned. Because of religion I was thrown out of my country. But we can do something, we eliminate all the problems of humanity which are caused by the belief in God. It is dangerous to follow the religious scriptures in this modern world. Not only the Koran, all the religious scriptures are out of time, out of place.
Both the Judeo-Christian bible and the Koran clearly accept and condone slavery. Jesus explicitly tells slaves to accept their roles and obey their masters. No one in the world today would defend chattel slavery in any public forum or allow its under any legal code. Neither fundamentalist Christians nor orthodox Jews talk about animal sacrifice or slavery. In those countries in which Sharia law exists, where stoning for adultery and amputation for stealing are legalized, no legitimization of slavery is ever mentioned. Polygamy and use of concubines are clearly accepted in the old testament but no where in the Judeo Christian world are either of these practices legalized. Thus, insistence of continuation of practices which denigrate, oppress and suppress women under the guise of scriptural reference is a hoax. Such practices could and should be de legitimized as chattel slavery has been de legitimized.
I have been writing about all this. But my freedom of expression have been continuously violated by the authority. I could not reach the readers of my country. My latest book my girlhood is banned in my country. My autobiography, I realize , is not just my life story. It is the same story that thousands of women know about. It tells how Muslim women live in a patriarchal country that has hundreds of traditions in which girls and women suffer. I have looked back into my childhood days and described the life of being a female child, told how I was brought up, explained that I had privileges that many others did not have. I was able to study and become a medical doctor, something which thousands of girls cannot even dream about. I wanted to show where and how I grew up and what made me think differently, what made me do things differently. It is important to give other women some strength to revolt against the oppressive system that I grew up under and which still continues for them. I told the truth. I expressed everything that happened in my life. Normally it is taboo to reveal rape or attempted rape by male members of one’s family. Girls shut their mouth, because they are terribly ashamed. But I did not shut my mouth. I did not care what people would say to me or to my family. I know well that many women feel that I am telling their untold stories, too. We, the victims should cry out loud. We need to be heard. We must protest loudly and demand our freedom and rights. We must refuse to be shackled, chained, beaten and threatened. We have only one life, and we demand to live it in happiness.
If women do not fight to stop being oppressed by a shameful patriarchal and religious system, then shame on women! Shame on us for not protesting, for not fighting, for allowing a system to continue that will affect our daughters.
My story is not a unique one. My experiences, unfortunately, have been shared by millions of fellow sufferers. In my book, I cried for myself. I also cried for all the others who have not been able to enjoy the productive life of which they are capable and which they most assuredly deserve! We who are women no longer must remain solitary, crying softly in lonely places.
I do not regret for what I have done so far, for what I have ever written. Come what may, I will continue my fight against all the evil forces without any compromise until my death. I am all the more committed and all the more determined to my cause. -Taslima

Just the slightest traces of hair around the genital area and the young Jewish boy were taken away and beheaded. Muhammad took a Jewish woman as his sex slave and looted the property of the murdered Jews and sold their women and little girls that the jihadists did not want as sex slaves into slavery. Allah – the godfather and mafia chieftain of the Muhammad crime family rejoiced by creating as Eternal Laws of God – 5 teachings in the Koran celebrating the great slaughter of the BanuQuraiza Jews and enslavement of terrified women.
At the Massacre of Kaibyr, Muhammad brutally tortured a Jewish chieftain to reveal where he had hidden the golden treasure of Kaibyr. When the chieftain refused to give Muhammad the treasure he was taken away and beheaded. This chieftain was the husband of a most beautiful 17 year old Jewish woman – Safiyaah. After murdering her father, brothers, uncles, husband – Muhammad will attack and rape Safiyaah.
During the massacre of The Jewish Settlement of BaniMustaliq – Muhammad will capture and rape a twenty year old Jewish girl – Juwairiya. MUHAMMAD WAS THE FIRST NAZI SS MAN.
If Islam was a true religion of peace in which Muslims prayed 5 times a day, fasted for one month yearly, abstained from alcohol, went on a pilgrimage once in a lifetime then nobody would care. But this is not the reality of Islam.
Islam is not a religion but a political – military ideology with religious trappings masquerading as a religion. Only 10% of Islam has anything to do with religion, the other 90% is political.
The Koran is not the bible but the Islamic Mein Kampf.
In order to understand Islam, you must suspend all rationally and reason. Everything you have ever been taught about God, the equality of humanity, morality, golden rule, goodness and kindness must be abandoned for the irrational, immoral World of Allah – the ANTI GOD where deceit, assassination, massacre, extermination, genocide, murder, rape, slavery, terror, torture, brutality, hate, robbery, looting and pillaging are not criminal acts but holy blessed duties, halal (legal) acts as long as they are perpetrated on kafirs guarantying accession to a Paradise filled with voluminous breasted, lustrous eyed virgins that they can sexually molest for all eternity. Islam permits polygamy, pedophilla, wife beating, marriage with adopted son’s wives and unlimited sex with sex slaves. Allah is a pedophile permitting Muslim men to rape Muslim baby girls.
ALL MUSLIMS REGARD THE KORAN AS THE ETERNAL DIVINE WORD/TEACHINGS OF GOD THAT ARE UNCHANGABLE (FOREVER)AND CAN NEVER BE QUESTIONED. Islam is anti God. Islam is a total and complete renunciation of God. While Muslims believe that there is only one God of the universe, their conception of God – a being they call Allah is not God but the ANTI GOD. This Allah (the ANTI GOD) worshipped by Muslims has divided all human beings into believers (Muslims) and non believers (kafirs i.e. YOU – Non Muslim.) Allah hates all kafirs with an intense passion. Kafirs are sub – human beings. They have zero humanity. Muslims must submit to Allah without question, non believers must submit to and be the slaves of Muslims, and Muslim women must submit to Muslim men.
Islam means submission. Islam demands the complete surrender of all human beings to Allah.
Islam is all about Muslim men. It is an evil ideology created by a man – Muhammad for his male followers granting them unlimited sex, riches, and political power.
Allah hates all Muslim women with a deep seated loathing. Muslim women are vile, dirty, stupid creatures. Muslim men can have multiple wives, unlimited sex slaves, can marry and rape Muslim baby girls, beat his wives, and murder them and his daughters if they dare impugn his honor. Whereas kafirs have zero humanity, Muslim women are only just slightly higher on the human evolutionary scale having evolved to being half a human. This is the divine order of the universe ordained by Allah. This vision of the inequality of Muslim women to Muslim men, and the Eternal sub – humanness and lack of humanity of kafirs is FOREVER and can never be changed in any way.
It is the prime directive of Islam to conquer the nations of the world for Allah by whatever means necessary. Allah seeks the extermination of all kafirs. By refusing to convert to Islam, kafirs have declared war against Islam, are a grave danger to Allah and must be destroyed. Islam is a declaration of war against kafirs. The Koran is not a holy book but a book of war. A book of genocide. Allah is a god of war. This war is permanent until all kafirs convert to Islam or agree to pay a devastating Jizya (submission tax) or are murdered.
For Muslims, it is a holy religious duty to murder kafirs. The Quran is written in the language of terrorism. It is filled with numerous verses urging the Muslims to terrorize the non Muslims, kill them, and take possession of their lands and properties. The important points to remember is that whatever Muhammad did to terrorize the kafirs was actually the actions of God. Among the many verses which exhort Islamist terrorism, the following verses stand out as naked aggression of Allah/Muhammad on the unbelievers: 2:63, 3:151, 8:12, 8:60, 8:59, 9:5, 9:29, 9:55, 11:102, and 17:59 etc. These teachings are the Eternal Laws of Allah authorizating murder and extermination as a holy duty.
Again as a kafir, you are not a human being to a Muslim. You have absolutely no humanity. A Muslim has the full right granted to him by God, to murder you, take your wife and young daughter(s) rape and gang rape them (no matter what the age of your daughter) take them as sex slaves or sell them into slavery to be breed like cattle for future sex slaves and profit. Your male children will be beheaded if they are young men. If there is any doubt as to whether your young son is a young man or a young boy, Muslims will pull down their pants and examine their genitals for the slightest growth of hair. Just the slightest hair growth is enough for him to be beheaded. All your property will be seized and whatever the Muslim does not want to keep as his personal property, the remainder will be sold.
As a kafir you have absolutely NO RIGHT TO OWN ANYTHING. It is a sacrilege against Allah. All your property – your home, car, money, furniture, stocks and bonds, corporations, farms, is the property of the Muslims who have holy blood flowing through their veins. Your wife and children are the Muslim’s property to be tortured, brutalized, raped as the Muslim desires.
If a Muslim kills or is killed murdering, raping, pillaging non – Muslims then they are guaranteed accession by God to a Paradise of full breasted, lustrous eyed virgins who regenerate as virgins after each sex act that they can sexually molest with external erections for all eternity. THIS IS THE EVIL INSANITY THAT IS ISLAM.
Dar al-Islam and dar al-harb: the House of Islam and the House of War (By Robert Spencer)
Islam is based on an uncompromising division of the world between Believer and Unbeliever, or Infidel: dar al-Islam (The house of Islam) and dar al-harb (the House of War). There must be a state of war between the two — though not always a state of open warfare. For Muslims have a duty to spread Islam, and to constantly expand the boundaries of Dar al-Islam, the place where Islam dominates, and Muslims rule. This is a duty, not a suggestion.
All Muslims Must Make Jihad
Jihad is an obligation from Allah on every Muslim and cannot be ignored nor evaded. Allah has ascribed great importance to jihad and has made the reward of the martyrs and the fighters in His way a splendid one. Only those who have acted similarly and who have modeled themselves upon the martyrs in their performance of jihad can join them in this reward. Furthermore, Allah has specifically honoured the Mujahideen {those who wage jihad} with certain exceptional qualities, both spiritual and practical, to benefit them in this world and the next. Their pure blood is a symbol of victory in this world and the mark of success and felicity in the world to come.
Those who can only find excuses, however, have been warned of extremely dreadful punishments and Allah has described them with the most unfortunate of names. He has reprimanded them for their cowardice and lack of spirit, and castigated them for their weakness and truancy. In this world, they will be surrounded by dishonour and in the next they will be surrounded by the fire from which they shall not escape though they may possess much wealth. The weaknesses of abstention and evasion of jihad are regarded by Allah as one of the major sins, and one of the seven sins that guarantee failure.
Islam is concerned with the question of jihad and the drafting and the mobilisation of the entire Umma {the global Muslim community} into one body to defend the right cause with all its strength than any other ancient or modern system of living, whether religious or civil. The verses of the Qur’an and the Sunnah of Muhammad are overflowing with all these noble ideals and they summon people in general (with the most eloquent expression and the clearest exposition) to jihad, to warfare, to the armed forces, and all means of land and sea fighting.
The violent injunctions of the Quran and the violent precedents set by Muhammad set the tone for the Islamic view of politics and of world history. Islamic scholarship divides the world into two spheres of influence, the House of Islam (dar al-Islam) and the House of War (dar al-harb). Islam means submission, and so the House of Islam includes those nations that have submitted to Islamic rule, which is to say those nations ruled by Sharia law. The rest of the world, which has not accepted Sharia law and so is not in a state of submission, exists in a state of rebellion or war with the will of Allah. It is incumbent on dar al-Islam to make war upon dar al-harb until such time that all nations submit to the will of Allah and accept Sharia law. Islam’s message to the non-Muslim world is the same now as it was in the time of Muhammad and throughout history: submit or be conquered. The only times since Muhammad when dar al-Islam was not actively at war with dar al-harb were when the Muslim world was too weak or divided to make war effectively.
But the lulls in the ongoing war that the House of Islam has declared against the House of War do not indicate a forsaking of jihad as a principle but reflect a change in strategic factors. It is acceptable for Muslim nations to declare hudna, or truce, at times when the infidel nations are too powerful for open warfare to make sense. Jihad is not a collective suicide pact even while “killing and being killed” (Sura 9:111) is encouraged on an individual level. For the past few hundred years, the Muslim world has been too politically fragmented and technologically inferior to pose a major threat to the West. But that is changing.

Democracy and freedom are an affront to Allah. All constitutions are offense to Allah and must be destroyed and replaced with Sharia Law.
Large parts of the Koran are legal code and form Islamic constitutional law. Since Muslims believe that these laws come from Allah and Mohammed they are of a higher order truth than any man-made laws. Therefore, Sharia law must replace all other forms of government.
Sharia is the legal code ordained by Allah for all mankind. To violate Sharia or not to accept its authority is to commit rebellion against Allah, which Allah’s faithful are required to combat. Under Sharia law, all kafirs are second class citizens. Women can be beaten and slavery is allowed. And just as in political Islam, Sharia law cannot be reformed.
It is the long term goal of Islam to replace the US Constitution with the Sharia, since it contradicts Islam. For that matter, democracy violates Sharia law. Democracy assumes equality of all peoples. Islam teaches that a Muslim is a better person than kafirs and that the kafirs should submit to Islam. But in voting, a Muslim’s vote is equal to a kafir’s vote. This violates Islamic law, since a Muslim and a kafir are never equal.
There is no separation between the religious and the political in Islam; rather Islam and Sharia constitute a comprehensive means of ordering society at every level. While it is in theory possible for an Islamic society to have different outward forms — an elective system of government, a hereditary monarchy, etc. — whatever the outward structure of the government, Sharia is the prescribed content. It is this fact that puts Sharia into conflict with forms of government based on anything other than the Quran and the Sunnah.
The precepts of Sharia may be divided into two parts:
1. Acts of worship (al-ibadat), which includes:
Ritual Purification (Wudu)
Prayers (Salah)
Fasts (Sawm and Ramadan)
Charity (Zakat)
Pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj)
2. Human interaction (al-muamalat), which includes:
Financial transactions
Endowments
Laws of inheritance
Marriage, divorce, and child care
Food and drink (including ritual slaughtering and hunting)
Penal punishments
War and peace
Judicial matters (including witnesses and forms of evidence)
As one may see, there are few aspects of life that Sharia does not specifically govern. Everything from washing one’s hands to child-rearing to taxation to military policy fall under its dictates. Because Sharia is derivate of the Quran and the Sunnah, it affords some room for interpretation. But upon examination of the Islamic sources, it is apparent that any meaningful application of Sharia is going to look very different from anything resembling a free or open society in the Western sense. The stoning of adulterers, execution of apostates and blasphemers, repression of other religions, and a mandatory hostility toward non-Islamic nations punctuated by regular warfare will be the norm. It seems fair then to classify Islam and its Sharia code as a form of totalitarianism.
The most important teaching in Islam is that all Muslims MUST believe that the Koran is the Eternal divine word of God – the Eternal laws of God. All Muslims MUST believe that God authored the Koran and a copy of the Koran is in heaven. (Thats right – God Himself wrote the Koran and a copy is in heaven.) The Koran remains for all Muslims, not just “fundamentalists,” the uncreated word of God Himself. It is valid for all times and places forever; its ideas are absolutely true and beyond all criticism. To question it is to question the very word of God, and hence blasphemous. A Muslim’s duty is to believe it and obey its divine commands without question.
Muslims can be killed (beheaded) for doing any of the following:
Reviling Allah or his Messenger; (2) being sarcastic about ‘Allah’s name, His command, His interdiction, His promise, or His threat’; (3) denying any verse of the Quran or ‘anything which by scholarly consensus belongs to it, or to add a verse that does not belong to it’; (4) holding that ‘any of Allah’s messengers or prophets are liars, or to deny their being sent’; (5) reviling the religion of Islam; (6) being sarcastic about any ruling of the Sacred Law; (7) denying that Allah intended ‘the Prophet’s message . . . to be the religion followed by the entire world.’
This means exactly what it says. ALL MUSLIMS MUST BELIEVE that the Koran is the ETERNAL word/teachings of God to be followed without question. If a Muslim challenges or questions the Koran, HE IS NO LONGER A MUSLIM BUT AN APOSTATE OF ISLAM and can be killed.
The Koran can never be changed not even one word. When you are reading teachings of the Koran, you are reading the word of God himself and you must OBEY. THERE IS NO CHOICE. There is no exercising free will, no employing logic, reason, rationality, morality. These teachings are for all time – FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER.

In Islam there is no Golden Rule – treat others as you wish to be treated. The ten commandments do not apply to kafirs.

If the Golden Rule was applied to Islam removing hate and violent teachings directed against the kafir – and the hate directed against Muslim women about 61% of the Koran would vanish, 75% of the Sira and 20% of the Hadith would also go away.
The Golden Rule even changes Hell. Islamic Hell is primarily political. Hell is mentioned 146 times in the Koran. Only 9 references are for moral failings—greed, lack of charity, love of worldly success. The other 137 references to Hell involve eternal torture for not agreeing that Mohammed is right. That is a political charge, not a morals failure. Thus 94% of the references to Hell are as a political prison for dissenters. The Golden Rule would empty Islam’s political prison.
The Golden Rule annihilates the ethics of cruelty. Golden Rule Islam would be a reformed Islam that the kafirs would not fear and dread. We are tired of living in fear of political Islam. When Muslim men die and pass to Islamic Paradise (Heaven), they expect to enter a utopian dimension where wine, milk and honey flows, fruit-trees flourish and rivers gush forth with the purist water.
Here, they plan to be greeted by 72 young virgins of “perpetual freshness” (houris) who will lead them into palaces loaded with luxurious thrones surrounded by gold, silver and jewel plated furnishings.- a holy place where believers reclined on jeweled couches surrounded by the finest silks can experience unlimited erotic sexual pleasures.
Islamic scholar Yusuf Ali described the virgins as “the companionship of Beauty and Grace – one of the highest pleasures of life. In the higher life it takes a higher form…The pronoun in Arabic is in the feminine gender. It is made clear that these maidens for heavenly society will be of special creation,-of virginal purity, grace, and beauty, inspiring and inspired by love, with the question of time and age eliminated.”
The virgins, according to another Islamic commentator are “creations of God, intelligent yet soulless and created to serve the believer who goes to Paradise. They are created for the purpose of serving the believer, and as such, they don’t exactly have free will. They are described as pure, beautiful, dark eyed, lustrous, virgin, and more perfect than any human on earth. Imagine the woman of your dreams.”
Quranic commentator Al-Suyuti (died 1505 ) explained more graphically that Muslim men in Paradise experience non-ending arousals and that ever time they have sex with one of the angelic maidens, they find her body reconstituted as “virgin.”
“The sensation that you feel each time you make love is utterly delicious and out of this world and were you to experience it in this world you would faint,” Al-Suyuti explained. ” Each chosen one [Muslim] will marry seventy houris, besides the women he married on earth, and all (will be appetizing).”
Islam’s Prophet Muhammad was heard saying about Islamic Heaven: ‘The smallest reward for the people of paradise is an abode where there are 80,000 servants and 72 wives, over which stands a dome decorated with pearls, aquamarine, and ruby, as wide as the distance from Al-Jabiyyah [a Damascus suburb] to Sana’a [Yemen].”
To assure Muslim men that they will be able to fully enjoy their heavenly rewards, Muhammad said, “A man in paradise shall be given virility equal to that of one hundred men.”
Islamic law and moral guidance for all of Islam is mostly based on the life of Muhammad and his Quranic revelations, his life as a conquering warrior and his sayings, acts, approvals or disapprovals. He was born 570 years after the death of Jesus Christ.
Muslims say that the Archangel Gabriel manifested himself to Muhammad where he was secluded in a cave to pray.

Muslim women were and still are restricted to the role of wife, who is a source of comfort for her husband and mother for his children. This because Muhammad was heard to say “men are the protectors and maintainers of women because Allah has given one more strength than the other, and because they support them from their means” and “stay quietly in your houses, and make not a dazzling display of yourselves like that of the former times of ignorance. When a Moslem female turns 7 years old, she is segregated from all males in and out of her extended family. From then on, no males including her father, grandfather, uncles, brothers, cousins are allowed to be present at her birthday parties or at any ceremony celebrating her accomplishments.
At 9 years old, she must begin adhering to Islamic laws because she is considered an adult and eligible for marriage. Muhammad contracted for his wife Aisha, when she was 7 (he was 51) and consummated the marriage when she was 9.
Aisha, was the second of 11 wives and an unknown number of concubines and female slaves who Muhammad collected during his life, which span from 570 AD until 632 AD.
When a Muslim woman steps from her house into the public, her body must be covered from head to toe with no skin showing (hijab).
This law, according to Islamic tradition, is a result of Muhammad becoming upset one day when he noticed several of his wives flirting with men who were visiting him. Muhammad ordered the women to retire behind a dividing curtain when speaking to the men. It was that order by Muhammad which caused the Islamic obligation of hijab. The term comes from the Arabic word “hijaba,” which means to hide from view.
If a Muslim women gets sick, she is required to be treated by female doctors. If none are available, she must be examined through some sort of divider or go without treatment.
Like Muslim men, Muslim women must kneel facing Mecca and pray five times a day and fast one month out of a year. Women are required to pray at home in many Islamic countries because females are not allowed in mosques. Among the countries which allow women in mosques, the women are banished to basement rooms or other segregated spaces.
Muslim leaders explain that for Islamic prayers to be “valid” and “accepted by Allah,” the prayer must be offered with a complete presence of the heart, harmony of the inner self and uninterrupted concentration.
They say women performing the Muslim prayer movements of standing upright, sitting, bending and prostrating is inappropriate because it distracts men from their prayers. For justification, Muslim leaders point to the Islamic tradition which states ” . . . and whoever prays behind a woman imam should repeat his prayers even if the time slot for that specific prayer has passed.”
Muhammad was once heard saying: “from among my followers there will be some who will consider illegal sexual intercourse, the wearing of silk, the drinking of alcoholic drinks and the use of musical instruments, to be lawful. Allah will destroy them during the night and will let mountains fall on them. He will transform the rest into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Doom” (Hadith, Volume 7, Book 69, Number 494v).
As a result, Muslim women are ordered not to wear silk (fashionable cloths) or bright colors, play musical instruments, dance, wear make-up, date, have sex outside of marriage, play sports, watch men play (even on television), etc. If they get caught doing so, depending on the Islamic country, they will be arrested and beaten.
Women living under Islamic laws are not allowed to work, travel, go to college, join organizations, or visit friends and relatives without the permission of their father or husband.
They can be legally jailed or executed for violations of Islamic laws, depending on the seriousness the infraction.
Quranic verse 24:31 warns Muslim women not to make eye contact or allow any part of their skin or jewelry to be seen by strangers, “and tell the believing women to lower their gaze and protect themselves from illegal sexual acts, and not show off their adornment [to all men] and boys].” As a result of this verse, if an adult girl (9 years and older) is raped by an adult man, she will be considered at fault because she was careless and provoked the attack. Her parents will be expected to severely punish or kill her for dishonoring her family.
If a woman is taken political prisoner, and condemned to death, Islamic law prevents her from being executed as long as she is a virgin because Muslim leaders believe virgins go to heaven. But, according to those same leaders, women involved in politics are “ungodly creatures” who do not deserve to go to heaven. To insure that an “ungodly virgin” does not enter heaven, the woman’s captors will treat her as a concubine making it legal for her to be systematically raped.
Islamic justification for raping woman prisoners can be found because Muhammad gave permission for Muslim warriors to rape enemy prisoners “except those (captives and slaves) whom your hands possess. Thus has Allah ordained for you…..” Surah 4:24. The key words for the Islamic legal code are “whom your hands possess” and “thus Allah has ordained for you.”
Muslim Quranic (bible) verse 4:34 instructs Muslim men to “admonish” and “beat” their wives if they become “rebellious” and that “men are the managers of the affairs of women because Allah has preferred men over women and women were expended of their Rights.”
In an Islamic court of law, it takes the testimony of two women to override the testimony of one man. Justification for this legal tradition is found in Quran 2:282.
Muslim women are not allowed equal right to their inheritance (Quran 4:11-12) because they are only worth half of a man’s share. In most Islamic countries, women are not allowed to vote and are certainly not allowed to be elected to public office.
According to Islam, most women are inherently evil and their ultimate destiny is Hell fire. Muhammad explained about one of his visions, “. . . I stood at the gate of the Fire [Hell] and saw that the majority of those who entered it were women.”
When a women asked Muhammad why there were more women in Hell than men, he replied, “You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you. A cautious sensible man could be led astray by some of you.”
When the woman asked what was deficient in a woman’s intelligence and religion, Muhammad answered, “Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man? This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn’t it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses? This is the deficiency in her religion.”
Because Muhammad said, “marry such women as seem good to you, two, three, four; but if you fear you will not be equitable, then only one, or what your right hands own; so it is likelier you will not be partial,” polygamy is legal in Islam. A man may marry “four Permanent” and as many “Provisional” or temporary wives as he desires.
Because Muhammad said, “your women are a tillage for you; so come unto your tillage as you wish,” Islam assumes not only that women are worth less than men, but that they are property who must unquestionable meet all her husband’s sexual desires. If she refuses, he has the legal right under Islamic law to deny her food, shelter, and all of life’s necessities.
A Muslim woman does not have the right to choose who she wants to marry. She is not permitted to divorce her husband unless she can prove he is impotent or that he does not have sex with her “at least one night in every forty nights” and if he has not provided her with a minimum standard of living. In both cases, the woman would need another witness, because Muhammad said a women’s testimony counts only “half of a man’s.”
If a Muslim women protests any of her treatment, she is reminded that “her husband can divorce her simply by repeating “I divorce you” three times and that her prayers and devotions will not be accepted by God and curses of heaven and earth will fall upon her” if she continues to rebel.
Since Muhammad’s time, Muslim women have been made to fear the Hell Fire consequences of disobeying husbands and fathers, but what can the loyal and obedient women expect to find for herself in paradise?
Because Paradise, is described in largely male terms, the exact nature of an equivalent reward for women remains unclear. Married women, who pass the purity test will be reunited with their husbands and children. A woman who married more than once would have to choose which husband she would prefer to join her in the after-life. She, however, remains reserved for her husbands, if one chooses to keep her.
Men who married more than once will remain free to keep all their wives while having the privilege of being attended to by 72 pure, beautiful, dark eyed, lustrous angelic maidens, whose bodies continuously reclaims as “virgins.”
Muslim scholars say that Muslim women in Paradise are also rebuilt young and beautiful with perpetual virginity, but that there is no Quranic promise of virgins for women.
Although Muhammad was heard promising that “round about them will serve boys of perpetual freshness: if thou seest them, thou wouldst think them scattered pearls,” Muslim scholars are emphatic that the pretty virgin boys in Paradise are not there for the women.

Muhammad is also understood to have said that because he slept with her, she has become like a wife to his; so she will be considered like “mother of the believers”.

It is a question that has vexed many minds. Muslims claim that the Quran does not sanction such a brutal act against the women. Critics of Islam say that it does sanction harsh punitive measures against, and beating of, wives, who defy their husbands and do ugly things that they are not at all supposed to do. In this connection, they cite verse 4:34 of the Quran, which reads:
“Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband’s) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all).” (Trans. by Abdullah Yusuf Ali).
The translation of the same verse by Mohammed Marmaduke Pickthall reads:
“Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great.”
A close reading of both the translations draws our attention to one important point, it being: Yusuf Ali’s translation has the words “the husband’s” in it, but Pickthall’s translation does not. That Ali has added this word in a parenthesis proves the fact that it does not exist in the Arabic version of the verse and that he has added it to his translation in order to hide a truth of gigantic proportion. We shall discuss this truth momentarily.
We find that Allah has mainly done the following four things through the Quran:
(1) prohibited idols worshipping;
(2) retained certain Pagan practices that were to His liking;
(3) abolished certain social practices of the pagans, which He disliked, and
(4) introduced some customs or practices that were not present among them, but He wanted them to follow them in their lives after they became Muslims.
We have stated the above facts so that the readers can easily understand what we are going to state in the following paragraphs of this narrative.
In the pre-Islamic days, the eldest sons of the Pagans inherited their fathers’ widows with the flocks and the tents. Incest between sons and stepmothers thus was not only lawful but obligatory.’1 Since this pagan practice was highly obnoxious, Muhammad retained it in the Quran to subtly, systematically and effectively avenge the betrayals, insults and hardships the women in the homes of his grandfather and uncle had inflicted on him, when he was living with them. With this intention in his mind, he had Allah reveal verses, permitting all Muslim men to punish all the women under their control, be they their mothers, sisters, wives and daughters. One verse reads:
“Your wives are as a tilth unto you: So approach your tilth when or how ye will: But do some good act for your souls beforehand; and fear Allah, and know that ye are to meet Him (in the Hereafter) and give these (good) tidings to those who believe.” [Q 2:223]
The translator was dishonest here. He intentionally rendered nisaa as “wives” rather than “women” to mislead the Muslims and other readers of the Quran. The word “nisaa” in the verse includes wives, slave-girls, and all other women over whom men exert financial control.
Effectively permitting the Muslim men to rape their women (“Approach your tilth “where,2 when or how ye will”), but only after doing some good to compensate for the heinous crime they are about to commit, Allah also told His beloved followers what we read in verse 4:34, quoted above.
Though this verse has received notoriety due to the notion that it allows the Muslim men to beat their “wives,” but hardly anyone has truly understood its true meaning and implications. To make our contention clear, we emphasize the following:
This verse, 4:34, is part of a Sura that is titled “Women,” or “An-Nisaa” in Arabic.
The word ‘husbands” is not in the original; instead, we find “men” in it.
The word “wives,” or azwajaka in Arabic, is not in the original either; instead, we see :Nissa” or “women.”
This verse has no connection with those that precede and follow it. In other words, it is not contextual and the instruction it contains stands on its own.
Keeping these facts in mind, what do we find in the verse? It says that the Muslim men are the protectors and maintainers of women, as they support them financially (and in Muhammad’s time and in many parts of the third world today, men commonly support their fathers, mothers, sisters, wives, and daughters, if they cannot support themselves). Therefore, women under the men’s patronage should obey them and guard what Allah wants them to guard (that is, their private parts). But if men simply “fear” disloyalty and bad behavior from their women, they must first warn them. If they still feel fear, they must refuse to sleep with them. And if their fear persists, the men must beat them. However, if the women “return to obedience” — presumably, extinguish the fear — then the men must not seek “means of annoyance,” — presumably, further punishment — against them.
Question is: Could Allah have given such an open and obnoxious permission to men to beat, and not to have sex with, those women who depend on them for their survival?

A Mut’ah woman is especially a target of cultural and legal ambivalence… Personally, she might be more mature and experienced than other women (because she has married at least once and been divorced), and legally, she is freer than married than a virgin women to negotiate on her own behalf or choose her male partner(s), and exercise her own decision-making powers… She is her own person as it were. A divorced woman’s status is the closest that a Shia’ite Muslim woman can come to having legal autonomy. Autonomy, however is not a trait socially approved of for women in Iran? Although some men may welcome it and even be fascinated by the alluring autonomy of women, as is apparent in the ‘Mut’ah myths’. They are at the same time fearful of the arbitrariness implied in it; just as they may be selected for a treat. They may be let go unceremoniously, because temporary marriages is a contract of lease and its objective is sexual enjoyment only… Mut’ah women are seen not only as objects of exchange (indeed, they are referred to as the objects of lease) but also as temporary sexual partners for the day… There is thus a close structural association with prostitutions… Consequently, the customs of temporary marriages and its propriety involved cultural questionings with conflicting feelings, and the women who make use of it are also perceived with moral ambivalence…
Much to women’s disappointments, the temporary marriages often bestows them neither with the masculine protection nor with the social prestige’s that they so earnestly seek” (Haeri). But Khomeni also reduced the age of marriage and permitting girls as young as nine to marry. Muhammad himself married his favorite wife A’isha, the daughter of Abu Bakr, one of his closest associates when she was six years old. Muhammad was 52 and A’isha was by that time only 9 years old and still played with dolls, when they sexually consummated their marriage! Muhammad followed an Arab custom in marrying a child who had had her first menstrual cycles. The legal marriage age for girls in Iran was only in 2002 increased from 9 to 13years. “Khomeini lowered the marriage age for females from eighteen to thirteen, but permitted girls as young as nine, even seven in some cases, to be married if a physician signs a certificate agreeing to their sexual maturity.
‘In his book Tahrir Al’ Vassilih, Khomeini writes about the legal requirements for having sex with girl children’ explained a woman lawyer who is concerned that child brides are dying since this ruling was instituted… ‘In villages where child marriage is most common, doctors here often don’t even see the girl,’ she told me. ‘They just take the family’s word that she is physically mature enough to marry. Consequently, we have had very young girls badly injured and when they have had what amounts to forced intercourse. Infection sets in and they have died.’ ‘Only with girls under seven did the Ayatollah say that sex was forbidden”.
Khomeini has gone so far as saying sex with infants is acceptable:
“A man can have sexual pleasure from a child as young as a baby. However, he should not penetrate. If he penetrates and the child is harmed then he should be responsible for her subsistence all her life. This girl however would not count as one of his four permanent wives. The man will not be eligible to marry the girl’s sister”. The complete Persian text of this saying can be found in “Ayatollah Khomeini in Tahrirolvasyleh, Fourth Edition, Darol Elm, Qom”.
Child marriages in Afghanistan
Roshan Qasem will be joining the household of Said Mohammed 55, his first wife, their three sons and their daughter, who is the same age as Roshan.
Mohammed Agha of district central Logar province had slaughtered his 14-year-old wife.
Nasrin was banned from meeting any one outside the four walls of her house. Revealing the ordeal of her teenaged daughter, the dejected mother said ‘Daad Mohammad (the accused) used to tie her (Nasrin’s) hands and feet and beat her severely’.
In contrast to the severe legal punishments for women with a statement on men and Mut’ah:
“No one can deny that most, if not all married men have had sexual relations, legitimate or illegitimate, with other women. Is it wise then to forbid married men from having relations with other women? Is such a law just and in accordance with human nature? Of course not, such law has not been practical and will not be so! A. A. Muhajir “Polygamy and Mut’ah” (Haeri).
This is consistent with Muhammad’s approval of polygamy, including marriage unto slaves. Islamic law requires a man to provide each of his wives with a household of her own. Thus marital polygamy was usually the privilege of the prosperous (Walther). However, in addition to the four wives, Muslim men can also select any number of slave concubines for themselves:
‘marry such women as seem good to you, two and three and four; but if you fear that you will not do justice (between them), then (marry) only one or what your right hands possess; this is more proper, that you may not deviate from the right course (Surah 4.3).
The Quranic passages on marriages, according to Shia’ites, also spell out the conditions for Mut’ah, in which ‘as to whom you profit by’ means ‘among them whom you have enjoyed’:
‘And all married women except those whom your right hands possess (this is) allah’s ordinance to you, and lawful for you are (all women) besides those, provided that you seek (them) with your property, taking (them) in marriage not committing fornication. Then as to those whom you profit by, give them their dowries as appointed; and there is no blame on you about what you mutually agree after what is appointed; surely allah is Knowing, Wise (Surah 4.24).
The parties to a marriage-contract are not the bride and groom, but the groom and the bride’s male relatives. Marriages can thus be forced (Walther):
‘the parties to the contract are the bridegroom and the bride’s guardian… her closest male relative, usually her father or brother or, if the need be, even the judge himself. Two free male witnesses, or one male and two female witnesses, must be present on this occasion. The Sunnah of the Prophet recommends that the bride should not be married without her consent. However, silence is sufficient an indication of this agreement in the case of a virginal bride, since she is considered to be too shy or timid to speak for herself. When the girl is a minor, her guardian can also force her into marriage, but she has the right to annul this as soon as she is of age. The Maliki, Shafi’i and Hanbali [schools of Sunnah] even permit an adult woman to be forced by her guardian to contract marriage.
An important part of the marriage contract is the fixing of the dowry (haq-e-mahr or saddq), which is a form of ‘bride price’, not an endowment for the bride’s welfare from her family. However, the haq-e-mahr was not a purchase price, but as compensation from the bridegroom had to given to the parents of the bride for the loss to the tribe of the sons that the woman would bear. The haq-e-mahr was not paid when the girl married her cousin on her father’s side; that is, when she remained in the tribe. This is still true among Bedouins of today… The saddq was the wedding gift which the girl received. As early as the time of Muhammad, a distinction was no longer made between these two terms (Walther).
Wiebke Walther notes: “In the context of a divorce, the Quran says that they (women) have the same right as is exercised over them, though the men have a rank above them”. In fact, husbands are given free reign in matters of separation and divorce:
“You may put off whom you please of them, and you may take to you whom you please, and in whom you desire of those whom you had separated provisionally; no blame attaches to you; this is most proper, so that their eyes may be cool and they may not grieve, and that they should be pleased, all of them with what you give them” (Surah 33.51).
Under the triple talaq salutation, a husband merely has to repeat the oath of divorce three times for it to have immediate effect on marriage. Walther further notes that the Islamic law permits every man in a healthy mental state to repudiate his wife (talaq) without having to give any valid reason for it, and without even consulting a judge. There are only a limited number of ways in which a wife can free herself from her husband. The ‘khula’ or redemption was adopted from the heathen pagan practices in pre-Islamic times, and it consists in the wife’s purchasing her freedom from her husband by the payment of a certain sum—frequently equivalent to the dowry. It is laid down in the Quran that, after the divorce, the husband must provide for a wife, who is suckling a child, until it is weaned; this can extend to a period of two years. The mother has the right of custody for girls until they are of age or until they marry and for boys until puberty or the age of seven years. However, the father is the legal guardian of the children; only when they are poor, he is obliged by law to maintain them. Thus the mother usually returns to her family, which maintains her, with the children she has to look after.
A Muslim woman can not marry a non-Muslim, but a Muslim man is permitted to marry a Jewish or a Christian woman. After a divorce, a woman must wait for three months before remarrying. Men, however, are permitted to remarry immediately. (Surah 2:234) Muhammad introduced the waiting period in order to determine whether the woman was expecting a child, so that the paternity could be established without any doubt. If the woman was pregnant, she could only re-marry after the birth of the child.
“And the divorced women should keep themselves in waiting for three courses; and it is not lawful for them that they should conceal what Allah has created in their wombs, if they believe in Allah and the last day; and their husbands have a better right to take them back in the meanwhile if they wish for reconciliation; and they have rights similar to those against them in a just manner, and the men are a degree above them, and Allah is Mighty, Wise” (Surah 2.228).
Walther also notes “Here, as in later traditions in which women are defined as mothers, sisters, and daughters, their roles are defined from a man’s point of view; as women are seen in their family relations and in their sociability with men”:
“Amongst His signs is that He hath created for you of your own species spouses that ye may find rest in them, and hath set love and compassion between you.” (Surah 30.21)
However, this very apparently ‘merciful’ Surah is cited by Qurtubi as a basis for a woman to have to submit to the sexual demands of the husband on call:
“When a man calls his wife to his bed, and she refuses, the One Who is in the heaven will be angry with her until he [her husband] is pleased with her” (Rafiqul-Haqq and Newton)
Such Quranic passages are reflected in hadiths, where sex on demand is a holy duty:
“The prophet of Allah said: When a man calls his wife to satisfy his desire, let her come to him though she is occupied at the oven.” (Rafiqul-Haqq and Newton).
Muhammad imposes a taboo on women as unclean during menstruation, but ordains intercourse the rest of the time under commandment of God, [as do the Jews]:
“And they ask you about menstruation. Say: It is a discomfort; therefore keep aloof from the women during the menstrual discharge and do not go near them until they have become clean; then when they have cleansed themselves, go in to them as Allah has commanded you; surely Allah loves those who turn much (to Him), and He loves those who purify themselves” (Surah 2.222).
Ever present is the role of the female as a sexual beast of burdens, light, or heavy:
“He it is Who created you from a single being, and of the same (kind) did He make his mate, that he might incline to her; so when he covers her she bears a light burden, then moves about with it; but when it grows heavy, they both call upon Allah, their Lord: If Thou givest us a good one, we shall certainly be of the grateful ones (Surah 7.189).
As in the Decalogue, where one is taught not to covet one’s neighbour’s house, wife, servants, or cattle (a wife having intermediate status between cattle and property), women are equated to domesticated beasts:
Aisha: The things which annul the prayers were mentioned before me. They said, “Prayer is annulled by a dog, a donkey and a woman (if they pass in front of the praying people).” I said, “You have made us (i.e. women) dogs. I saw the Prophet praying while I used to lie in my bed between him and the Qiblah. Whenever I was in need of something, I would slip away. For I disliked to face him.”
To al-Ghazali, woman is here created as a mere plaything. She is a recalcitrant domesticated animal, valued only in her fear of her husband (Rafiqul-Haqq and Newton):
“In the company of women, looking at them, and playing with them, the soul is refreshed, the heart is rested, and the man is strengthened to the worship of God… this is why God said: ‘That he might rest in her.’ (Surah 7:189)” (Essid ).
“If you relax the woman’s bridle a tiny bit, she will take you and bolt wildly. And if you lower her cheek-piece a hand span, she will pull you an arm’s length… Their deception is awesome and their wickedness is contagious; bad character and feeble mind are their predominant traits”…
“[A man’s wife] fears him, while he fears her not, a kind word from him satisfies her, where nothing of hers has importance in his eyes, it is she who must tolerate the presence of concubines, and it is she who worries when he is ill whereas even her death would leave him indifferent.”
The reference to women as domestic animals is reinforced in al-Tabari’s account of the prophet’s last and most famous speech (Al-Tabari, Abu Ja’far Muhammad b. Jarir. [The History of al-Tabari. Vol. IX, The Last Years of the Prophet, Translated and annotated by Ismail K. Poonawala, State University of New York Press, Albany, 1990, P. 112-114]:
“Treat women well, for they are [like] domestic animals (‘awan) with you and do not possess anything for themselves. You have taken them only as a trust from God, and you have made the enjoyment of their persons lawful by the word of God, so understand and listen to my words, O people.”
Despite the high price of dowry settlements to wives’ families in Saudi Arabia and the shunning of divorced women, more than twenty percent of Saudi marriages end in divorce within a year… Marriages suffer most from all the usual afflictions, infidelity, incompatibility, house-hold violence, but the biggest problem is polygamy by Muslim men… Many Saudi husbands constantly change partners, a practice that causes constant heartaches (Wright L)….
I would like to end this article by just saying this ‘the Muslim husband’s mindset has come to dominate their wives by their prophet’s ideology which has a harsh manifesto that is invading their women’s private space. Muslim women are a vulnerable group, especially in areas where protests against restrictions on personal freedoms are unwelcome with other women right out side Islam’…!

I never thought I would be writing this ever in my life. The first time I read your so many texts and articles over the rights of women in Islam. Some male critics, like recent one Zunaid, will never accept realities for obvious reasons.
When I was in my 6th grade, I was unhappy at certain things that I got to know about the way women are treated in Islam. This included the property rights and divorce procedures. But never in my entire life had I known that Muslims actually used to rape prisoners of wars and this was sanctioned by the Prophet. All, in my entire life, I read in my Islamic books that Muslims treated prisoners with kindness and this and that. I don’t find any sort of kindness in raping women who were captured. The only kindness was when they invaded Mecca. Maybe they did not mistreat the Meccans because it was the city in which our so called prophet was born and his relatives and the relatives of his followers were living there.
Well I do know one thing; maulvis in Pakistan tell us strange things like when we look into the mirror we should recite this; when we enter the house should say that; when we travel we should recite that dau, etc. These are the things they teach us. But, why do they hide such a BIG THING such as Muslims used to rape women captured in their raids? Yes it can only be called RAPE. How can a girl allow a person to have sex with her when they have killed her brother or father or husband? I cannot imagine myself or my mother or my sister in such a condition. It makes me sick to the stomach. You opened my eyes. I used to think so badly of the soldiers who raped women in Iraq. But the point is, are Muslims any better? They raped women when they could. Now, according to the logic of Islam, Iraq was in a state of war; therefore, based on Islamic reasoning, it was perfectly justifiable for the conquering army to raped the women.
Again based on Islamic logic, Iraq lost, so basically all the people in Iraq should become slaves of Americans including their women and children. But the thing is, only a handful of women in Iraq were raped and their rapists are prosecuted and sent to jail. Had it been the other way round and Muslims were the conquerors of a non-Muslim country, all the women would have become booty of Muslim soldiers and all of the pretty ones would have been raped.
I feel disgusted! I cannot imagine my six year old, or any six year old girl to be married to a 52 year old guy NO matter how religious that person is.
I am a woman and I don’t have a “short memory,” as Muhammad said. I am not “deficient in intelligence” either. I have outsmarted many guys in my life. All my life I have studied on scholarship and right now I am perusing a degree again on scholarship. Then how can our prophet say we women have short memory and deficient in intelligence? This is scientifically wrong.
Now considering that a girl is raped, where in the world can she find 4 eyewitness men to testify in her case? Rape is not a circus that people will be invited to watch. It’s usually done in an isolated place where no one can see. Say a girl was raped and gets pregnant. She needs 4 witnesses to prove that she was raped and usually there isn’t even one. But the proof that she had sex out of the wedlock is there in her womb. Then what will happen according to Islamic law? She can’t provide any proof of rape. So she will be accused of adultery and stoned to death. Does this sound just or logical? No it doesn’t, at least, to those, who have a heart and a brain.
Your conversation with that lady, Julia Roach, shook me to the core. It made me feel ashamed, sad, and mad! What have I been following all my life? They tell you only the good parts, but never these truths.
We in Pakistan never bothered to read the Quran in detail. We only knew what we were taught in our schools. The rest, we just depended on the scholars (who obviously lied to us, told us the good things, nothing about slaves and their rape was ever mentioned).
I tried to tell the things that I have learned to my family, but they have started calling me Kafir and stuff. When I was in Pakistan I used to be the same. I just wouldn’t listen to anything that was against Islam. I would close my eyes and my ears. I cannot denounce Islam publicly because my parents would be ashamed of me. I do not follow it anymore; and if I get a chance anywhere, I point to the fallacies of Islam to my friends as well. If I tell them that I have denounced Islam, they will never listen to me. I want them to listen to me and think logically just the way I did.

The Black Stone is a Muslim object of reverence, which according to Islamic traditions dates back to the time of Adam and Eve. Many consider it to be a Tektite. It is the eastern cornerstone of the Kaaba, the ancient Sacred Stone towards which Muslims pray in the center of the Grand Mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It is covered with an elaborately gold-threaded embroidered Quranic verses on a black-draped cloth. As any non-Muslim in the temple would be slain on sight, and photography is generally prohibited, this stone is shrouded in mystery? However, if you do succeed in tracking down the three accounts of the pilgrimage of Hajj to Mecca you might be considered a lucky one!
What these views reveal, is a polished black stone of which less than two feet is visible… This stone is set in large solid silver mountings. The whole resembles, quite deliberately, for reasons which will emerge, ‘the vulva of the goddess’! There is severe damage to the stone, as it was taken away by the sacrilegious Qarmatians in 930 CE and broken into a number of pieces before returning the pieces for a great price. The Stone pieces are held together by a silver frame, which is fastened by silver nails to the Stone. The Stone is roughly 30 cm (12 in.) in diameter, and 1.5 meters (5 ft.) above the ground. When pilgrims circle the Kaaba as part of the Tawaf ritual of the Hajj, many of them try, if possible, to stop and kiss the Black Stone, ‘emulating the kiss that it received from Prophet Muhammad.’ If they cannot reach it, then they are to point to it on each of their seven circuits around the Kaaba.
The Black Stone of Kaaba in Mecca is called Al-hajar Al-aswad in Arabic. The word Kaaba (also Ka’ba, or Ka’bah) means ‘The Cube’. That Muslims now refer to it as the ‘Hand of Allah’, which does not diminish the urge for all those, who complete the pilgrimage to Mecca to touch or kiss this sacred Islamic object! 🙂
The Black Stone’s Origin
‘A principal sacred object in Pagan Arabian religion was the stone… Such stones were thought to be the residence of a god; hence the term applied to them by the Byzantine Christian writers of the fifth and sixth centuries: ‘baetyl’, from bet’el, ‘the house of god’.’ [1]
‘In north Arabian temples the image of the deity sometimes stood in the open air or it could be sheltered in a qubbah, a vaulted niche… Not to be confused with the qubbah is the word for ka’bah, for a cube-shaped walled structure which… served as a shelter for the sacred stones.’ [2]
Camphausen, in his article [3], reveals that the misogynic Muslim religion has its origins in the worship of goddess. Allah is a revamped version of the ancient goddess Al’Lat, and it was her shrine, which has since continued with little change, as the Kaaba. The known history of Mohammed reveals that he was born around 570 CE into a tribe of the Koreishe (Quraysh), who not only worshipped the goddess Q’re, but were the sworn guardians of her shrine. By 622, Mohammed was preaching the ways of his god, Allah, and was driven out by his own tribe as a result. There are also various opinions as to what the Black Stone actually is… The Muslims say that the Stone was found by Abraham (Ibrahim) and his son Ishmael (Ismail) when they were searching for stones with which to build the Kaaba (House of God). They recognized its worth and made it one of the building’s cornerstones.
The Kaaba at Mecca describes the shape of the black stone structure on a marble base, which stands in the centre court of the Great Mosque, Masjidul Haram, at the centre of Mecca. It stands about 50 feet high by about 35 feet wide. Set into the eastern corner is the sacred stone. This Kaaba is a cubed shaped temple (according to Islam) rebuilt by Abraham and his son Ishmael. Reverently draped in black cloth throughout the year, it beckons to every Muslim of the world to come to its sacred ground and perform the ritual of Hajj.
The Kaaba is the canonical center of the Islamic world; every pious act, particularly prayer, is directed towards it. Once a year it plays host to the greatest convention of Muslim believers, and stands ready to sanctify the Umrah travelers through rest of the year.
The official starting point of the walk around the Kaaba, that forms the core of the holy pilgrimage (hajj). During the Tawaf, the pilgrims kiss or touch the black stone as they circumambulate the Kaaba.
Some Muslims are more willing to believe that the Stone itself has some supernatural powers. They believe that this ‘stone fell from the sky during the time of Adam and Eve, and that it has the power to cleanse worshippers of their sins by absorbing them into itself’. They say that the Black Stone was once a pure and dazzling white, and it has turned black because of the sins it has absorbed over the ages.
It is remarkable, however, that even though the temple contained 360 idols worshipped before Muhammad’s prophethood, the Black Stone was never kissed or made an idol of worship by the pagan Arabs. In fact, the Kaaba was never worshipped by the idolaters prior to Muhammad’s Prophethood. The building contained idols of worship but the building itself was never an object of worship.
The fact that the Kaaba was rebuilt by Abraham is not an historical fact! Since the stone has been there ever since, the pagans found it lying in the sands of Arabia; it stands to reason that Abraham placed the stone in the Kaaba? The Black Stone is in fact not the cornerstone of the Kaaba, and there never was an emblem of the progeny of Abraham that was rejected by the Israelites. It was Muhammad, who made it the corner stone of the Kingdom of Allah.
The Black Stone, therefore, passes for the mithaq (primordial covenant between the Creator and His created). And in the whole world there is only this unhewn stone, cut out of the mountains without hands, and that is the corner-stone of a building, which in point of importance, stands unique in the world…???
Touching or kissing the stone has a profound impact on the faithful, as it is supposed to count in their favor on the Islamic Judgment Day. [Judgment Day is a metaphor for the return to balance with the duality of the reality of man.]
Ibn Jubayr (1145-1217), the great Muslim traveler from Valencia, describes the emotion he felt on touching the stone, “The stone, when one kisses it, has a softness and freshness, which delights the mouth; so much so that he who places his lips upon it wishes never to remove them”. It suffices, moreover, that the Prophet said that it is the ‘Right Hand of God on Earth’ so Allah has a ‘Stoned Hand’ also?
The single most important reason for kissing the stone is that Prophet Muhammad did so! No devotional significance, whatsoever, is attached to the stone by the pre-Islamic pagans, who worshipped it. Kissing or touching the Black Stone is a reverential act of acknowledgment that Allah’s hand directed its placement and in its construction. That Abraham and Muhammad, Allah’s blessing upon them, had touched and kissed the stone, and an acknowledgment that Allah had entrusted the ‘corner stone’ of His religious central focus for man upon that hallowed, sacred place.
Researchers have noted that the Kaaba is accurately aligned on two heavenly phenomena: the cycles of the moon and the rising of Canopus, the brightest star after Sirius. There are various other opinions as to what the Black Stone actually symbolizes. Many Muslims regard the Stone as ‘just a stone’. When Umar ibn al-Khattab (second Caliph) came to kiss the stone, he said, in front of all assembled:
“No doubt, I know that you are a stone and can neither harm anyone nor benefit anyone. Had I not seen Allah’s Messenger kissing you, I would not have kissed you”.
Muslims, therefore, pay their respect to the Black Stone in a spirit of trust in Muhammad, not with any belief in the Black Stone itself.
The Triple Goddesses
Pre-Islamic worship of the goddess seems to be primarily associated with Al’Lat, which simply means ‘goddess’. She is a triple goddess, similar to the Greek lunar deity Kore/Demeter/Hecate. Each aspect of this trinity corresponds to a phase of the moon. In the same way Al’Lat has three names known to the initiate: Q’re, the crescent moon or the maiden; Al’Uzza, literally ‘the strong one’, who is the full moon and the mother aspect; then Al’Manat, the waning but wise goddess of fate, prophecy and divination. Islamic traditions continue to recognize these three, but labels them ‘daughters of Allah’.
According to Edward Rice [4] “Al’Uzza was especially worshipped at the Kaaba where she was served by seven priestesses. Her worshippers circled the holy stone seven times – once for each of the ancient seven planets, and did so in total nudity.
Near the Kaaba is the ever-flowing well, Zamzam, which cools the throats of the countless millions of pilgrims. In an oasis of always-flowing water, the Black Stone in its mount became an unmatched image of the goddess as giver of life. Only in the Indian continent do such physical symbols for the male and female generative powers, the lingam and yoni, continue to be worshipped with their original fervour.
It is easy to imagine that in pre-Muslim times, the goddess’s temple at Mecca was preeminent, whether to celebrate life, ask protection, pray for offspring. Legend tells how Abraham, unable to produce children by his wife Sarah, came here to make love to his slave Hagar. Later on, when Hagar came back to give birth, she could find no water and Abraham created the holy well of Zamzam to save the life of his first son.
When Mohammed wanted to supplant Al’Lat with Allah, this was the one Temple he must conquer. Although Mohammed did conquer the Kaaba, little else changed. The faithful still circle the Holy Kaaba seven times, (nowadays the pilgrims only wear a white linen cloth to cover their genitals and not fully clothed)? The priests of the sacred shrine are still known as Beni Shaybah or ‘Sons of the Old Woman’, Shaybah being, of course, the famous Queen Sheba of Solomon’s time. Sheba appears under the guise of Lilith in the Near East, and as Hagar (‘the Egyptian’) in the Hebrew mythology of the Old Testament. So, rewriting the legend given above, Abraham begot his son, Ishmael—the ancestor of the Arabs—by the goddess on the Black Stone of the Kaaba.
While we are tracing names, Q’re (or Qure), the maiden aspect of Al’Lat, seems certain to be the origin of the Greek Kore. Camphausen suggests that the holy Koran is the ‘Word of Qure’. Even Muslims admit that the work existed before the time of Mohammed. Legend has it that it was copied from a divine prototype that appeared in heaven at the beginning of time, or the Mother of the Book [5]. Al’Uzza, the mother aspect of Al’Lat, may give us the pre-dynastic Egyptian snake goddess Ua Zit [Uadjet], who develops into Isis.
Secular historians point to the history of stone worship, and especially meteorite worship, in pre-Islamic Arabia, and say that ‘it is likely that the Stone is a meteorite’. There is no way to test this hypothesis without removing and examining the Stone, which would not be permitted by its guardians. There is no indication as to where this stone originated, but since it predates the revelation of the Holy Quran and Muhammad’s prophethood, and even being kissed, it must stem from the time of Abraham since the Hajj traditions are traceable to the patriarch of monotheism by the pre-islamic pagans.
Other Cultures and Deities
The earliest reference we have to a goddess worshipped as a cube-shaped stone is from Neolithic Anatolia. Alternatively, ‘Kubaba’ may mean a hollow vessel or cave, which would still be a supreme image of the goddess. The ideograms for Kubaba in the Hittite alphabet are a lozenge or cube, a double-headed axe, a dove, a vase and a door or gate—all images of the goddess in Neolithic Europe.
Deities of other cultures known to have been associated with black stones include Aphrodite at Paphos, Cybele at Pessinus and later Rome, Astarte at Byblos and the famous Artemis/Diana of Ephesus. The latter’s most ancient sculpture was, it is said, carved from a black meteorite.
The earliest form of Cybele’s name may have been Kubaba or Kumbaba, which suggests Humbaba, who was the guardian of the forest in the Epic of Gilgamesh, the world’s oldest recorded myth from Assyria of circa 2500 BCE of the ‘Sumerites Literature’ and as scholars reveal more of the text as the source of most of the major mythological themes of later civilizations [6].
The origin of Kubaba may have been kube or kuba meaning ‘cube’. The earliest reference we have to a goddess worshipped as a cube-shaped stone is from Neolithic Anatolia [7].
The stone associated with Cybele’s worship was, originally, probably at Pessinus but perhaps at Pergamum or on Mount Ida. What is certain is that in 204 BCE, it was taken to Rome, where Cybele became ‘Mother’ to the Romans. The ecstatic rites of her worship were alien to the Roman temperament, but nevertheless animated the streets of their city during the annual procession of the goddess’s statue. Alongside Isis (god of the Egyptians), Cybele retained prominence in the heart of the Empire until the fifth century BCE, when the stone was then lost. Her cult prospered throughout the Empire and it is said that every town or village remained true to the worship of Cybele [8]. Various Classical writers describe the rituals, which went on her in her honor, in which a tapering black stone, the object of veneration at her temple, was used.
At Mecca, the Goddess was ‘Shaybah’ or’ Sheba’, the Old Woman, which was worshipped as a black aniconic stone like the Goddess of the Scythian Amazons. The sacred Black Stone that now enshrines in the Kaaba was her feminine symbol, marked by the sign of the yoni (vagina), and covered like the ancient Mother by a veil. No one seems to know exactly what it is supposed to represent today?
The Black Stone rests in the Haram, “Sanctuary”, cognate of “harem,” which used to mean a Temple of Women, in Babylon, a shrine of the Goddess Har, mother of harlots! Hereditary guardians of the Haram were the Koreshites, “children of Kore”, Mohammed’s own tribe. The holy office was originally held by women, before it was taken over by male priests calling themselves ‘Beni Shayban’ (“Sons of the Old Woman”).
More Black Stones
The home of Aphrodite was at Paphos on Cyprus. Various Classical writers describe the rituals which went on her in her honour – these seem to include the practice which is now known by the disdainful term of ‘sacred prostitution’. In any event, the tapering black stone which was the object of veneration at this Temple still survives, even if it now placed inside the site museum [9].
Also in Cyprus is another highly venerated Islamic site, the third most important after Mecca and Medina, the Hala Sultan Tekke. This, too, has a black rock, said to have fallen as a meteorite as part of the tritholon over the shrine. The shrine is dedicated to a woman, the aunt and foster mother of Prophet Mohammed [10]. Could this, like Mecca, have been originally a goddess shrine? Unfortunately no other clues are forthcoming.
Another site stated to have a Black Stone was at Petra, but I have been unable to discover where this was or who was worshipped there (any clue from readers?)!
To add a little local flavour, numerous standing stones in the British Isles are reputed to have fallen from the stars. The now-lost Star Stone marked the meeting of Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire; an also-vanished stone at Grimston, Leicestershire, was also said to have such an origin. Whether or not such stones were ever associated with goddess worship, we will never know.
It would take far too long to discuss to what extent the cult of the goddess’s Black Stone may have been perpetrated as Solomon’s bride in the Song of Songs, who is ‘black but beautiful’ or to come to terms with the black images of Demeter, Artemis and Isis, who have their direct continuation in the Black Virgins of Europe—patrons of the troubadours, the Gnostics and the alchemists, as well as the present Pope. Those, who wish to follow such ideas, would do well to read ‘The myth of the goddess’ [11], which, in a sober but inspirational manner, reevaluates how the feminine deity has remained with us throughout history.

We are a group of Muslim apostates, who have left Islam out of our own conviction when we discovered that Islam is not a religion at all. Most of us took a prolonged period of time to study, evaluate and contemplate on Islam, the religion of our birth. The core of Islam—that is, the Qur’an, Hadis and Sharia—is filled with unbounded hatred of the unbelievers, is unbelievably intolerant toward them, and is extremely cruel and merciless to Muslims who dare to deviate from its doctrine.
We also realized that Islam is beyond alteration, because Muslims—who attempt to modernize and reform its unremitting bigotry, irrational rituals and its cruel and draconian punitive measures—are targeted for annihilation. Our verdict was that the only way to escape from the tyranny of Islam is to leave it altogether. We have, therefore, discarded Islam from our lives so that we can be free to enjoy a normal, pleasant and humane life in complete harmony with all peoples on earth, irrespective of their religion, race or creed.
Having thoroughly understood—through our meticulous investigation of Islam for years to decades—that Islam was nothing but a lie forged by Muhammad, most of us have left Islam silently because of the threat to our life from believing Muslims, apostasy is punished with death in Islam. As Islamic terrorism and violence overwhelms the world, particularly in the post-9/11 years, we felt that it’s a responsibility upon us to make world’s 1.4+ billion Muslims aware of the falsity of their religion and its cruel nature, so that they can make informed choices and leave Islam to live with love, respect and harmony with the rest of humanity.
We also felt it incumbent upon us to make the non-Muslim world aware of the reality of Islam, and take timely precautionary measures against this religion of terror, hatred and mayhem. We tell the world that the ongoing terrorism, unleashed by Islamic militants, is not an aberration from the so-called ‘peaceful religion of Islam’; instead, it is the real Islam preached and practiced by its founder, Prophet Muhammad. A thorough study of the Qur’an and prophetic tradition (Hadith, Sunnah) makes that obvious.
We, therefore, have launched this website to expose the “real Islam”—the Islam that is determined to replace the modern civilization with the 7th-century Arab Bedouin barbarism, peddled by Muslims as the true Islamic Civilization. My mother used purdah. She wore a burqa with a net cover in front of the face. It reminded me of the meatsafes in my grandmother’s house. One had a net door made of cloth, the other of metal. But the objective was the same: keeping the meat safe. My mother was put under a burqa by her conservative family. They told her that wearing a burqa would mean obeying Allah.
Women too have sexual urges. So why didn’t Allah start the purdah for men? Clearly, He treated them on unequal terms.
And if you obey Allah, He would be happy with you and not let you burn in hellfire. My mother was afraid of Allah and also of her own father. He would threaten her with grave consequences if she didn’t wear the burqa. She was also afraid of the men in the neighbourhood, who could have shamed her. Even her husband was a source of fear, for he could do anything to her if she disobeyed him.
As a young girl, I used to nag her: Ma, don’t you suffocate in this veil? Don’t you feel all dark inside? Don’t you feel breathless? Don’t you feel angry? Don’t you ever feel like throwing it off? My mother kept mum. She couldn’t do anything about it. But I did. When I was sixteen, I was presented a burqa by one of my relatives. I threw it away.
The custom of purdah is not new. It dates back to 300 BC. The women of aristocratic Assyrian families used purdah. Ordinary women and prostitutes were not allowed purdah. In the middle ages, even Anglo-Saxon women used to cover their hair and chin and hide their faces behind a cloth or similar object. This purdah system was obviously not religious. The religious purdah is used by Catholic nuns and Mormons, though for the latter only during religious ceremonies and rituals. For Muslim women, however, such religious purdah is not limited to specific rituals but mandatory for their daily life outside the purview of religion.
A couple of months ago, at the height of the purdah controversy, Shabana Azmi asserted that the Quran doesn’t say anything about wearing the burqa. She’s mistaken. This is what the Quran says:
“Tell the faithful women that they must keep their gaze focused below/on the ground and cover their sexual organs. They must not put their beauty and their jewellery on display. They must hide their breasts behind a purdah. They must not exhibit their beauty to anybody except their husbands, brothers, nephews, womenfolk, servants, eunuch employees and children. They must not move their legs briskly while walking because then much of their bodies can get exposed.” (Sura Al Noor 24:31)
“Oh nabi, please tell your wives and daughters and faithful women to wear a covering dress on their bodies. That would be good. Then nobody can recognise them and harrass them. Allah is merciful and kind.” (Sura Al Hijaab 33: 59)
Even the Hadis –a collection of the words of Prophet Mohammed, his opinion on various subjects and also about his work, written by those close to him– talks extensively of the purdah for women. Women must cover their whole body before going out, they should not go before unknown men, they should not go to the mosque to read the namaaz, they should not go for any funeral.
There are many views on why and how the Islamic purdah started. One view has it that Prophet Mohammed became very poor after spending all the wealth of his first wife. At that time, in Arabia, the poor had to go to the open desert and plains for relieving themselves and even their sexual needs. The Prophet’s wives too had to do the same. He had told his wives that “I give you permission to go out and carry out your natural work”. (Bukhari Hadis first volume book 4 No. 149). And this is what his wives started doing accordingly. One day, Prophet Mohammed’s disciple Uman complained to him that these women were very uncomfortable because they were instantly recognisable while relieving themselves. Umar proposed a cover but Prophet Mohammed ignored it. Then the Prophet asked Allah for advice and he laid down the Ayat (33:59) (Bukhari Hadis Book 026 No. 5397).
This is the history of the purdah, according to the Hadis. But the question is: since Arab men too relieved themselves in the open, why didn’t Allah start the purdah for men? Clearly, Allah doesn’t treat men and women as equals, else there would be purdah for both! Men are higher than women. So women have to be made walking prisons and men can remain free birds.
Another view is that the purdah was introduced to separate women from servants. This originates from stories in the Hadis. One story in the Bukhari Hadis goes thus: After winning the Khyber War, Prophet Mohammed took over all the properties of the enemy, including their women. One of these women was called Safia. One of the Prophet’s disciples sought to know her status. He replied: “If tomorrow you see that Safia is going around covered, under purdah, then she is going to be a wife. If you see her uncovered, that means I’ve decided to make her my servant.”
The third view comes from this story. Prophet Mohammed’s wife Ayesha was very beautiful. His friends were often found staring at her with fascination. This clearly upset the Prophet. So the Quran has an Ayat that says, “Oh friends of the prophet or holy men, never go to your friend’s house without an invitation. And if you do go, don’t go and ask anything of their wives”. It is to resist the greedy eyes of friends, disciples or male guests that the purdah system came into being. First it was applicable to only the wives of the holy men, and later it was extended to all Muslim women. Purdah means covering the entire body except for the eyes, wrist and feet. Nowadays, some women practise the purdah by only covering their hair. That is not what is written in the Hadis Quran. Frankly, covering just the hair is not Islamic purdah in the strict sense.
In the early Islamic period, Prophet Mohammed started the practice of covering the feet of women. Within 100 years of his death, purdah spread across the entire Middle East. Women were covered by an extra layer of clothing. They were forbidden to go out of the house, or in front of unknown men. Their lives were hemmed into a tight regime: stay at home, cook, clean the house, bear children and bring them up. In this way, one section of the people was separated by purdah, quarantined and covered.
Why are women covered? Because they are sex objects. Because when men see them, they are roused. Why should women have to be penalised for men’s sexual problems? Even women have sexual urges. But men are not covered for that. In no religion formulated by men are women considered to have a separate existence, or as human beings having desires and opinions separate from men’s. The purdah rules humiliate not only women but men too. If women walk about without purdah, it’s as if men will look at them with lustful eyes, or pounce on them, or rape them. Do they lose all their senses when they see any woman without burqa?
My question to Shabana and her supporters, who argue that the Quran says nothing about purdah is: If the Quran advises women to use purdah, should they do so? My answer is, No. Irrespective of which book says it, which person advises, whoever commands, women should not have purdah. No veil, no chador, no hijab, no burqa, no headscarf. Women should not use any of these things because all these are instruments of disrespect. These are symbols of women’s oppression. Through them, women are told that they are but the property of men, objects for their use. These coverings are used to keep women passive and submissive. Women are told to wear them so that they cannot exist with their self-respect, honour, confidence, separate identity, own opinion and ideals intact. So that they cannot stand on their own two feet and live with their head held high and their spine strong and erect.
Some 1,500 years ago, it was decided for an individual’s personal reasons that women should have purdah and since then millions of Muslim women all over the world have had to suffer it. So many old customs have died a natural death, but not purdah. Instead, of late, there has been a mad craze to revive it. Covering a woman’s head means covering her brain and ensuring that it doesn’t work. If women’s brains worked properly, they’d have long ago thrown off these veils and burqas imposed on them by a religious and patriarchal regime.
What should women do? They should protest against this discrimination. They should proclaim a war against the wrongs and ill-treatment meted out to them for hundreds of years. They should snatch from the men their freedom and their rights. They should throw away this apparel of discrimination
