Is Marrying Non-Muslims (read Hindus) Allowed in Islam? – By Aiman Reyaz, New Age Islam 16 Oct 2012

One of the most common misconceptions about Islam is that it prohibits Muslims from marrying non-Muslims. Most people, both Muslims and non-Muslims, believe this to be true, and the Ulema insist that that is the case. They commonly cite verse 2:221 from the Quran to make their point:

“Do not marry unbelieving women, until they believe: A slave woman who believes is better than an unbelieving woman, even though she allures you. Nor marry (your girls) to unbelievers until they believe: A man slave who believes is better than an unbeliever, even though he allures you. Unbelievers do (but) beckon you to the Fire. But Allah beckons by His Grace to the Garden of Bliss and forgiveness, and makes His Signs clear to mankind: That they may celebrate His praise.”

The Ulema interpret “unbelieving” as “non-Muslim”, but that is not quite correct. The Arabic word used in this verse is “al Mushrikun”, which means pagans. It obviously refers to pagans at the time of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). These were people who often buried their daughters’ right after their birth, for whom women were merely for carnal pleasures. Women among the pagans had no rights, they lived entirely on the mercy of men.

So it was specifically for the protection of (Muslim) women that the Quran forbade marriages with the pagans – and them alone. As no divine faith preaches such treatment for women, even a literal interpretation of this verse does not prohibit marriage with a man or woman belonging to any other religion.

Abduallah Yusuf Ali says: “Marriage is a most intimate communion, and the mystery of sex finds its highest fulfillment when intimate spiritual harmony is combined with the physical link. As religion is a real influence in life to both parties or to either party, a difference in this vital matter must affect the lives of both more profoundly than differences of birth, race, language, or position in life. It is therefore only right that the parties to be married should have the same spiritual outlook. If two persons love each other, their outlook in the highest things of life must be the same. Note that religion is not here a mere label or a matter of custom or birth. The two persons may have been born in different religions, but if, by their mutual influence, they come to see the truth in the same way, they must openly accept the same rites and the same social brotherhood. Otherwise the position will become impossible individually and socially.”

During a question-answer session, a woman asked televangelist Dr Zakir Naik about marriage between Muslims and non-Muslims. He said: “For a car to run smoothly it requires nice tyres, clean machine and good maintenance. Sister, I want to ask you, what if one tyre is of the tractor and the other is of a bicycle? Will the car run properly and smoothly?”

In his inimitable style, Naik avoided getting into the details of the issue, and instead cited a vague and irrelevant analogy by way of answer. Like many other Ulema, he cited verse 2:221, but did not interpret it correctly. Nor did he say anything about the Quran’s express permission to marry among the People of the Book – people who have been recipients of divine revelations.

In verse 5:5, the Quran says: “This day are (all) things good and pure made lawful unto you. The food of the People of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them. Lawful unto you in marriage are not only chaste women who are believers, but chaste women among the People of the Book, revealed before your time when ye give them their due dowers, and desire chastity, not lewdness, nor secret intrigues.”

This clearly means that marriage with a Christian or a Jew is allowed. It also means that marrying Hindus, Buddhists and members of various other faiths is not prohibited either. The Quran says that “In every age have We sent a revelation… to every nation have We sent a Warner”. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has said that Allah has sent 1, 24,000 prophets to the face of the Earth. Only 25 of them are mentioned by name in the Quran. The rest are not, but that does not make them lesser prophets, and nor should it deny their followers the status of People of the Book.

Let’s look at Hinduism. The Hindu scriptures also teach the concept of One God, who begets not and nor is he begotten. The Brahmasutra says: “There is only one God, and not a second.” Yajur Veda adds: “Of thy God there is no image, no idols.” This is exactly like the concept of Allah in Islam. It is not such a big leap of faith, then, to conceive of Ram, Krishna and other “avatars” of Vishnu as prophets, and of Vedas and Upanishads as divine revelations. Ditto for Buddhism. Even Mughal emperor Akbar considered these books to be the word of Allah, and his concept of “sulh kul” embraced all religions into a common fold that was “peace to all”.

Clearly, then, the received wisdom that Islam forbids Muslims to marry non-Muslims is incorrect. This notion is little more than another means by which the Ulema seek to divide the world and build walls between Muslims and their brethren.

Differences among communities have their own significance. In verse 22:40, the Quran says: “…had not Allah checked one set of people by means of another, there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant measure.”

But we must always remember that, as the children of Adam and Eve, we are all eventually members of one big human family, and that makes us more similar than different from each other.

It is impossible to understand Islam and Muslims by listening to their protestations against terror and their proclamations of patriotism for America. Usually, it is wise and fair to give people the benefit of the doubt but when it comes to national safety and the future of America, we had better look twice, even thrice at Muslim patriotism. Why? Because Islam permits lying! It is called “Al-taqiyya.” One Muslim said that Al-taqiyya means dissimulation then he expanded it to diplomacy but he should have gone further to deception. Now some Muslims who do not follow the Koran are as faithful Americans as any of us, but the problem is, we cannot know.

Muslims lie when it is in their interest to do so and “Allah” will not hold them accountable for lying when it is beneficial to the cause of Islam. They can lie without any guilt or fear of accountability or retribution. A lie in the defense of Islam is approved even applauded in their “holy” books.

Muslims are permitted to lie: (1) to save their lives, (2) to reconcile a husband and wife, (3) to persuade a woman into a bedroom and (4) to facilitate one on his journey. Muslims are even permitted to disavow Islam and Mohammed if it is not a genuine heart-felt rejection. Muslims will tell you that concealment of a truth is not an abandonment of that truth if it benefits Islam.

Mohammed gave permission for a follower to lie in order to kill a Jewish poet who had offended Mohammed. I could provide many examples of permissible lying from the Koran and Hadith and will do so when my critics accuse me of hatred and bigotry because of this column. My motives are not important but the truth is. However, many unprincipled people do not consider truth important. It is political correctness that sits on the throne to be worshiped.

Muslims may appear very sincere; in fact, they are sincere, when they lie for their own protection or in the cause of Islam. They have permission to lie. However, a Muslim has no guilt since the Koran and Hadith permit his deception.

Muslims have no hope for eternal salvation without their good works, so they must keep working to advance Islam. If a few lies will accomplish that goal, then lying is not bad but good. If they can get good publicity for Islam by lying, then lying is acceptable, even desirable.
They will lie to make Islam more attractive to potential converts as they speak of “no compulsion in religion” while all of them know that verse was abrogated by later verses. They will quote verses that speak of tolerance and kindness knowing that those verses were written when Mohammed was desirous of “tolerance and kindness,” but when he climbed into the catbird seat, everything changed and he became a terrorist.

Unlike Christians who are saved once for all by the grace of God through faith in Christ’s propitiatory death, no Muslim knows for sure if his works are good enough for Heaven. The only Muslim who knows for sure that his eternal destiny is secure and he will drop into a delightful garden filled with 72 virgins on soft green cushions is the one who dies while “taking out” unbelievers in Islam.

Most Muslims will not have the “opportunity” to become a martyr in this war between Islam and the rest of the world and make no mistake every true Muslim must be involved in making America (or the nation where he lives) a Muslim nation. Since Muslims are limited in their ability to die for the cause, they can help the cause by supporting terrorists with money, succor, and cover. Sure, they are aiding terror against the U.S. but since they believe they are doing Allah’s will, then any deception is acceptable.

    Hi every one,

Religion preaches harmoney, love, affection, attachment to every caste and creed with out any gender discrimination. I am muslim female born and in the name of islam, cannot repeat what attrocities me and my mother faced. In true sense islam is not a religion but a criminal and cruel ideology to crush females and non believers. Koran openly preaches kill non believers, treat females sex objects, keep 4 wives and any time kick them out by oral triple talak words, females require 4 witnesses to seek justice against rape, testimony of women half of the male, terrorists allowed 72 virgins in the heaven for sexual pleasure, female genital mutiliation, stonning to death only for women, mutta marriages for sexual pleasure, women required to prove virginity on the wedding night,(MALES NEED EVERY TIME VIRGIN WIFE), HALALA practice for women, IS IT A RELIGION? Murderer, rapist Mohammad claims to be messenger of allah, CAN A GOD BE SO CRUEL?

HAS ANY MALE BEEN EVER STONNED TO DEATH IRRESPECTIVE THOUSANDS OF CRIMES AGAINST MANKIND, EVERY TIME WOMEN IS STONNED TO DEATH?

IN THE NAME OF ISLAM NON MUSLIM GIRLS ARE TRAPPED FOR MULTIPLICATION OF THEIR POPULATION. MUSLIM GUYS ARE ALWAYS IN SEARCH OF TRAPPING INNOCENT NON MUSLIM GIRLS. IN THE BEGINNING THEY POSE VERY POLITE, SUBMISSIVE, KIND HEATED BUT ONCE GIRL IS TRAPPED THEIR REAL MONSTROUS FACE APPEARS.

IN THE NAME OF ISLAM CAN ANY ONE IMAGINE HOW MANY TERRORIST GROUPS ARE WORKING IN THE WORLD, IT IS MORE THAN 700 AS ON TODAY AND MOST SUFFERERS ARE THE MUSLIM COUNTRIES.

        April 25, 2015 3:53 am

Amritesh do you understand the meaning of interpretation?
if i say x + y = 7 taking that the value of x=3 and value of y=4 and someone says no no x + y = nothing, etc, blah blah, now wouldnt I correct him that look the value of x here is 3 and y is 4, so when we add up, we get 7, similarly, Quran should be understood as it was revealed, Quran should have understood in a way that it itself speaks, you cannot generalize the verses of Quranic verses out of context in 21st century which was revealed in 7th century .

Now, tell me if you marry her, what will be you children religion, don`t say they will follow humanity, those stupid replies, everything has system, India as rules, it defines law for specific people, a muslim cannot claim he is SC do get job like a hindu and a hindu cannot claim he is minority to claim scholarship, when filling up any serious govt form, you have to mention you religion, depending on what religion , certain rules applies on you and certain don`t. Teenagers like you claim this and that but in reality you create trouble by ignoring reality, thousands of youths are suffering everyday because of this ignorance about reality. Recently a 19 years old muslim girl married with a hindu boy in temple, the family of the girl filed FIR…and so so..later the girl in pressure of her family gave statement against her husband……she was pregnant of 3 months..now here is my issue..how come a girl got pregnant before her marriage..what kind of lover was he who didn`t care for girl`s chastity, respect, he did her in the name of love, made her pregnant, as she got pregnant he had no other option but to flee..she eloped..got married in temple as temple marriage is easy..surely she didn`t hate her parents ..it is only because that lunatic moron made her pregnant in the name of fake love, now what about her future..what about her education..is it right to make a 19 year old teen school/college going girl pregnant..why i said these things here, to show people who deny relevance of divine religion, what happens if you dis-obey your religion..if she had followed rules of Qur’an, she surely wouldn`t be in this situation..she would have been happy tension free girl…today a shock in Nepal took away took away more than 100 lives .. i am talking about todays earthquake…for those who don`t believe in afterlife punishment..do you think it is hard for the one who gave you life in the beginning to give you life once again in order to punish or reward you?

          mac…
again i will show you how you interpret things…
x y=7 ….yeah boy….its very simple.. that here ‘x’ n ‘y’ are variables n they can take numerous values not just 3 n 4……,this is why they are ‘variables’,…so…..ppl’s religions n faith might b different but it leads to the same god………

          but i guess u don’t want to understand that…becoz u know that only.. 3 4=7……
yes..there is problem with the wat you interpret things…..
reagrding ur story of the girl n boy……what u really want to say?
the boy didn’t raped the girl….if they did it on their will both are equally responsible for that.. yes… it was not right …so what? they did a mistake….because their family never openly talked about such things to them……..
n remember if a girl or boy elopes with their love/lover ….parents are equally responsible for this….i know u will understand simple things

          • mac
            May 10, 2015 1:49 am

You again failed to understand my explanation, i gave you that particular example to show the importance of context, every verse must be understood with it`s context, there is no verse in Quran that allows marriage with non muslim boy/girl, and if we take other teachings of islam in consideration, then we find in no way islam allows marriage with mushrik or idol worshiper/polytheist, because polytheist place is hell, now what will you do when your non-muslim spouse will be thrown in hell , will you live separately there? also nikah is possible only between two muslim or practicing Jew/christian(as said people of the book), for that you have the non-muslim partner have to accept islam before marriage, else your marriage will be illegal in the eyes of Allah and it will be considered as zina/fornication, more on why islam don`t allow marriage with non-muslim : http://islamnewsroom.com/news-we-need/1937-she-married-a-hindu-problems

Now coming to amritesh, i am not saying he raped the girl, but he was full grown boy, he must have cared about his lover`s future instead he opted for lust and pushed her in spot of bother from where there is no future ahead for her. If she had followed islam, then today she wouldn`t have been such horrible situation, because islam forbids fornication that is premarital sex, it forbids mingling with non-mehrem men who often take advantage of soft girls, also if her lover had accepted islam, then who knows her family would have accepted their marriage, also secret marriage is forbidden in islam for this reason so that no man can take advantage of any woman.

            @mac….
            actually u didn’t understand

I have seen people interpreting verses in their own way…on this site itself….u and Muhammad have also done it…..
… if u r calling those verses – ‘variables’….then u r doing a mistake…because x y=7 ….has infinite solutions….n infinite possible values….so in short, these verses will never have a proper meaning….chaos…n confusions only…….so every person can interpret it the way he likes….do u have a proof that he is wrong? or he is interpreting it wrong?

but sadly u will say ” only 3 4=7….” if a child writes 6.9 0.1=7 ..he is right..he can put infinite possible values…
btw u can’t compare maths n that crap written by an unknown……..maths is a purest language of the world…

            June 1, 2015 2:59 am

Yes exactly, and that is what you have to do with interpretation of Quranic verses, unlike other religion, Islam has preserved it`s context of revelation, let me make it little simpler for you, surely you have solved differential equations in 12th class, and you have come across particular differential equations, so when in any question it is asked to find differential equation when x= 0 , y=1, you cannot put x=1 and y=0 as in question it is clearly mentioned for which value of x and y , you are to find differential equation. Same way, in Quranic revelation context, there is no mention that this verse is only for 7th century, this verse will come into play when any Muslims about to marry and verses related with marriage verses will have meaning then, if there were verses in Quran where it said marriage with non-muslim men is allowed, then we could have applied different context. You also misinterpreted Aakash Mallik`s logic when he said islam and science are parallel, by this he meant islam donot contradict established science unlike other religions, you very rightly said that according to aakash that religion(islam) will keep in moving and will never met, and i say you are right, what we consider as science will end moment we die, but Islam will keep on continuing and many verses of Quran which humans being today cannot interpret will start to show its meaning, after death, only Islam will rule once life, human developed scientific methodology will end moment heart stops breathing.

            Read this carefully

///////Most of the great scientists were Christians and Jews…can you imagine a world without them? I hope people know about inventions and discoveries made by them.
So according to Islam one should not believe in them….they are dishonest and liars but everyone is using their inventions and discoveries? Wonderful. Great logic…..///

Liar amrritesh, you just made another lie on islam, when did islam said not to believe in them, islam always say believe in truth whether, you liar, cant defend your religion but out there to distort other religions, shame on you////

If you understand my just above to this comment of mine that islam means when it says it is only truth and rejects the idea of Jesus being god, those scientist didn`t prove Jesus as god, they gave laws on natural phenomenon and again since islam is the truth, so their given laws didn`t contradict islam but contradicted their own religion Christianity, so most of them were atheist/agnostic, many were killed by their churches.

***Sorry, actually while typing quickly i missed out important words, let me correct it.

If you understand my above comment(on Jesus pbuh) just above to this comment of mine and what islam means when it says it is only truth and rejects the idea of Jesus being god, those scientist didn`t prove Jesus as god, so when islam says don`t believe them doesn`t apply to those scientist as they gave laws on natural phenomenon and again since islam is the truth, so their given laws didn`t contradict islam but contradicted their own religion Christianity, so most of them were atheist/agnostic, and many were killed by their churches.

Infact islam encourages us to believe in those scientist as they were the one who told the truth about this world.

animals is too much better…atleast they do their work when we commands. . . why we dont want to accept the commandments of our creator. . .he is the lord of our world. .
he knows when he says to the mankind.. mankind will benefit.. .
if some restriction is there it will benefit to us only not to the creator

No one wants to be controlled to such an extent that they loose their ability to think or do something….Religion is not a group….its a way of living….everyone has their belief…no one can change that…not me not u…

Any readers can realise that argument put forwarded by Aiman Reyaz is a stupid one filled with logical fallacy. According to his logic, even it’s okay for a muslim to be non-muslim as being muslim was for that time. Does it make sense?
It is very important to understand that Quran has various layers of meaning. It is like a complex document having many layers like historical, biographical, pedagogical, aesthetic, and spiritual layers, anyone which mixes these things and interpret meaning of Quran is not the authentic meaning of Quran. In Quran, you have to find meaning in context and then apply those verses in present life and in upcoming days in context.

Here it is clearly explained with context whether marriage with non-muslim allowed or not. Click here islamnewsroom.com/news-we-need/1937-she-married-a-hindu-problems

Islam donot allow marriage with non-muslim(including hindus). There is not a single islamic school on the face of earth which allow marriage with non muslim without converting to islam. Even we don’t find a single hadith of prophet muhammad(pbuh) supporting muslim girl marriage with nön muslim men. Don’t think those days were mono-religious societies, there were many prevailing religions then just like today like judaism, xtianity.paganism(hinduism)…

  • Mohammed
    April 24, 2015 12:01 am

    bro. . The definition which
was given is not correct on
that site. . .There is not
    clear cut in that.. .
    He says Al Mushriqun is
    pagans but its not correct.
    The actual meaning which
    is comes from shirk(i.e.
    associating partners with
    the Allah s.w.t).. . . . The
    plural form of shirk is
    mushrik. .
    The verse 2:221 clearly
    says
“And do not marry polytheistic women until they believe. And a believing slave woman is better than a polytheist,
even though she might please you. And do not marry polytheistic men [to
your women] until they believe. And a believing slave is better than a polytheist, even though he might please you. Those invite [you] to the Fire, but Allah invites to Paradise
and to forgiveness, by His permission. And He makes clear His verses to the
people that perhaps they may remember.”

    If we analyze by todays.
..The major religion of the people except islam are polytheist. . . then its not possible to marry outside religion

  • April 23, 2015 9:06 pm

    Aakash,
This is a superb message, thanks for finding it. There is only one God (but different forms and names) and we ALL are same, not different. So why to fight? …. to please imams and priest class?
