Is Beating a Wife Allowed in Islam?

If a Muslim does not agree that beating a wife is allowed in Islam, please clarify it below.

In Islam, a married woman is the property of her husband. He is permitted to use violence to control his wife. Wife beating is divinely sanctioned by Allah in the Koran and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad.

Quran 4:34 Men (Muslims) are in charge of women (Muslimah), therefore Allah has made the Muslim (men) to excel the Muslim (women), and because Muslim (men) spend of their property, so good women (Muslimah) are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah has guarded. As for those women (Muslimah/wives) from whom you fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and beat them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them…

Note: words in parentheses () are the translators’ interpolation into the text. Those words do not exist in the Arabic text of the Koran.

Four reasons that sanction men beating their wives:

· if she refuses to beautify herself for him.

· if she refuses sex when he asks for it.

· if she refuses to pray or perform ritual ablutions.

· if she goes out of the house without a valid reason.

Also, Muhammad’s example is normative for Muslims, since he is an “excellent example of conduct” (Quran 33:21) – and Aisha reports that Muhammad struck her. Once he went out at night after he thought she was asleep, and she followed him surreptitiously. Muhammad saw her, and, as Aisha recounts: “He struck me on the chest which caused me pain, and then said: Did you think that Allah and His Apostle would deal unjustly with you?” (Sahih Muslim 2127)

Aisha herself said it: “I have not seen any woman suffering as much [from beatings] as the believing women.” (Sahih Bukhari 7.72.715)

Sharia Law mandates the oppression and subjugation of women:

Wife beating “[A husband] may hit her, but not in a way that injures her, meaning he may not break bones, wound her, or cause blood to flow.” (Reliance of the Traveler, Section m10.12)

Honor killing – “The following are not subject to retaliation: a father or mother for killing their offspring, or offspring’s offspring. (ibid Section o1.2(4))

Women over the age of puberty are not permitted to leave the house without covering the body (except face and hands). Fatwa 667, Part No. 17, Page 142-150
Women are not permitted to travel without a spouse or male relative. Fatwa 12139, Part No. 11, Page 38

Women are not permitted to be alone with men who are not relatives or spouses, and the punishment for such “indecency” is whipping or stoning. Fatwa 9693, Part No. 12, Page 381 & 382

Nearly half Saudi and Egyptian women are beaten up by their husbands or other family members.

To give Muslim women equal rights would be to deny the validity that Quran 4:34 and thus imply that Q.4:34 and other teachings are not from Allah but were fabricated by Muhammad.     A practicing Muslim man raped and threatened a young Norwegian girl for several hours. Numerous rapes in Sweden over the past several years have been committed by “non-Western men,” e.g., Muslims. In fact, in the past year, all rapes in Oslo have been committed by non-Western men.

    “He said that he had the right to do exactly as he wanted to a woman. Why? Because that is how it was in his religion. Women did not have rights or opinions. He was in charge.”

    Islam teaches utter disrespect for women, who are mere possessions of savage men, to be raped whenever the beasts feel like it. At least this rapist admitted that fact of Islamic misogyny and sexism, which should be obvious to anyone with eyes to see.

    Hi every one,

    “Verse 4:34 of the Quran orders believers to beat their wives; so, Islam is a male dominant religion.” Many of us have heard this criticism from Christians, atheists, agnostics, etc. Personally, every time I read 4:34, I felt that something was wrong. How does God, the Most Wise order us to beat our women? What kind of solution is that? It is in contrast to the verses in which God describes marriage:

    “Among His signs is that He created for you spouses from among yourselves, in order to have tranquillity and contentment with each other. He places in your heart love and care towards your spouses. In this, there are signs for people who think.” (30:21)

    Obviously, this mixed messages have bothered many contemporary translators of the Quran. To avoid the moral and intellectual problems, they tried to soften the word “beat” when they translate the verse 4:34. For instance, Yusuf Ali uses a merciful parentheses after “beat” to save women:

    “. . . As to those women on whose part you fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (next), refuse to share their beds, (and last) beat them (lightly). . .” (4:34)

    Many tried to ‘beat’ around the bush to ‘beat’ the problem generated by the ‘beat’ of 4:34.
    When I finished the Turkish translation (1991), this verse was on the top of my orange list to study carefully. Whenever I encounter a problem regarding the understanding of a Quranic verse, I remember 20:114 and pray accordingly:

    “Most Exalted is God, the only true King. Do not rush into (understanding) the Quran before it is revealed to you, and say, “My Lord, increase my knowledge”

    Almost all of the translations have mistranslated the four key words or terms of this particular verse. These are: “Qawwamune,” “Faddallallahu ba”dahum ala ba”d,” “Nushuzehunne,” and “Fadribuhunne.” In our late book, “Errors in Turkish Translations” (Istanbul, 1992) we have discussed the real meaning of these words and the motivation and reasons for mistranslating them. Here, we will focus on the last word, “Fadribuhunne.”

    A Famous Multi-Meaning Word

    The problem comes from the word “Idribuhunne” which we used to translate as “beat them”. The root of this word is “DaRaBa”. If you look at any Arabic dictionary you will find a long list of meanings ascribed to this word. That list is one of the longest lists in all the Arabic dictionary. It can be said that “DaRaBa” is the number-one multi-meaning word in Arabic. It has so many different meanings, we can find numerous different meanings ascribed to it in the Quran.
    To travel, to get out: 3:156; 4:101; 38:44; 73:20; 2:273
    To strike: 2:60,73; 7:160; 8:12; 20:77; 24:31; 26:63; 37:93; 47:4
    To beat: 8:50; 47:27
    To set up: 43:58; 57:13
    To give (examples): 14:24,45; 16:75,76,112; 18:32,45; 24:35; 30:28,58; 36:78; 39:27,29; 43:17; 59:21; 66:10,11
    To take away, to ignore: 43:5
    To condemn: 2:61
    To seal, to draw over: 18:11
    To cover: 24:31
    To explain: 13:17
    As you see, in the Quran alone we can witness the verb “DaRaBa” having at least ten different meanings. “DaRaBa” has also other meanings which are not mentioned in the Quran. For example, in the Arabic language, you do not print money–you “DaRaBa” money, you do not multiply numbers–you “DaRaBa” numbers, you do not cease the work–you “DaRaBa” the work. In Turkish we have many verbs similar to DaRaBa, such as “tutmak”, “calmak”, “vurmak” etc. In English we have two verbs which are almost equivalent to “DaRaBa”. These are “strike” and “beat”.
    Webster”s Dictionary gives fourteen meanings to the verb “strike”: hit (against); ignite; (of snake) bite; (of plants) (cause to) take root; attack; hook (fish); sound (time) as bell in clock etc.; affect; arrive at, come upon; enter mind of; discover (gold, oil etc.); dismantle, remove; make (coin); cease work as protest or to make demands. The same dictionary gives eight meanings to the verb “beat”: strike repeatedly; overcome; surpass; stir vigorously with striking action; flap (wings); make, wear (path); throb; sail against wind.
    In the beginning of this article (underlined) I deliberately used “beat” in three different meanings in a single statement just to show the variety of meanings in a single word. In English, when we order someone to “beat it” we mean “get out”. Similarly in Arabic, when we order someone with the commend form of “DaRaBa”, that is “iDRiB”, we mean “get out”.

    How Can We Find The Appropriate Meaning

    When we encounter a multi-meaning word, we select the proper meaning according to the context, forms, and common sense. For instance, if we had have translated “DaRaBa” in 13:17 as “beat” instead of “explain”, the meaning would be ridiculous:

    “. . . God thus beats the truth and falsehood” (13:17)

    Another example of mistranslation of ‘DaRaBa’ can be found in the translation of 38:44. All the translations (except Dr. Khalifa”s translation) inject a male-made story to justify their silly translation. Here is how Yusuf Ali translates the verse about Job:

    “And take in the hand a little grass, and strike therewith: and break not (the oath).”

    Yusuf Ali, in the footnote narrates the traditional story: “He (Job) must have said in his haste to the woman that he would beat her: he is asked now to correct her with only a wisp of grass, to show that he was gentle and humble as well as patient and constant.”
    However, without injecting this story, we can translate it as the following:

    “Now, you shall travel the land to fulfil your pledge (that is to deliver the message). We found him steadfast. What a good servant! He was a submitter” (38:44)

    Let’s turn back to 4:34
    Additionally, the word “Nushuz” which is generally translated as “opposition” has another meaning which can be translated as degrees of disloyalty ranging from flirtation to sexual liaison. If we study 4:34 carefully we will find a clue that leads us to translate that word as “flirting or cheating” or “extramarital affair” (Any word or words that reflect the range of disloyalty in marriage). The clue is the phrase before “Nushuz” as reads:

    “. . . and observe God’s commandments, even when alone in their privacy.”

    This phrase emphasises the importance of loyalty in marriage life.
    Furthermore, the same word “Nushuz” is used in 4:128, but it is used to describe the misbehaviour of husbands not wives as was in 4:34. So, the traditional translation of “Nushuz”, that is, “opposition” will not fit here. In vertical relations, “opposition” cannot be a double-edged behaviour. So, translators try to avoid this contradiction by ascribing just the opposite meaning of “opposition”, i.e., “oppression” in verse 4:128. However, the meaning of “Nushuz” as “disloyalty” is appropriate for both cases described in 4:34 and 4:128.

    A Coherent Understanding

    When we read 4:34 we should not understand “idribuhunne” as “beat those women”. We must remember that this word has many meanings. God gives us three ways of dealing with extra-marital-affair. In the beginning stage of such misbehavior husband should start from giving advice. If it does not work and she goes further and commit a proven adultery, that time husband has the right to strike them out (4:34 & 65:1).
    Let’s present our suggestion for the translation of verse 4:34

    “Men traditionally take care of women, since God has endowed each of them with certain qualities and men spend from their financial resources. The righteous women are obedient (to God) and during the absence (of their husband) they honour them according to God’s commandment. As for those women whom you are experiencing a fear of disloyalty from, you shall first advice them, then (if they continue) you may desert them in bed, then you may strike them out. If they obey you then don’t transgress against them. God is Most High, Supreme” (4:34).

    Beating women who are cheating is not an ultimate solution; but ‘striking them out’ from your house is the best solution. And it is fair too.

    Brutal treatment of women and young girls is rampant throughout the Muslim world. The abuse and murder is condoned by Muslim governments. Muslim women are regularly subjected to beatings at the hands of their husbands, for a host of reasons. They may suffer a savage attack for having an affair, or for simply disobeying their Muslim husband’s daily orders.

    It is also perfectly socially acceptable within the Islamic community, for a father to beat his daughter. The young girl may have spoken with a boy of whom the father does not approve, or forgotten to cover her face in public.

    While the physical abuse of one’s spouse or child is taken very seriously by American police officers and courts, the practice is ignored by even the so-called ‘moderate’ Muslim states. The term ‘domestic abuse’ does not exist within the Muslim world.

    A few years ago, a book entitled “The Islamic Woman” was published which detailed beating techniques to be imposed on Muslim women–at the hands of their abusive husbands. The book’s author is a Muslim Imam living in Spain, named Mohamed Kamal Mostafa.

    “The Islamic Woman” instructs men to hit women “on their hands and feet, making sure to use a cudgel that is not too thick so as not to leave permanent scar tissue.” Mostafa also warns his fellow Muslims to “inflict blows that are not too strong nor too hard, because the aim is to make them suffer psychologically.”

    Murder is also inflicted upon Muslim women by their husbands, fathers, and brothers. The practice is called “honor killings.” A Muslim woman or young girl will often be killed by a male family member, after she is believed to have committed an act which defies Islam.

    In February 2009, in Orchard Park, NY, Muslim television executive Muzzamil Hassan, was arrested and charged with murder, after allegedly beheading his wife Aasiya.

    After several incidents of domestic abuse, Aasiya Hassan filed for divorce, and secured an order of protection against her husband. A few days after divorce papers were filed, she was beheaded. Her remains were left in the offices of the television station she and her husband owned, near Buffalo.

    Muzzamil Hassan has been held without bail since his arrest, and is currently awaiting trial.

    Despite the horrific nature of this crime, Aasiya Hassan’s murder has received very little media attention.

    On New Years Day 2008, in Irving, TX, two Muslim girls, Amina Said, 18, and her sister Sarah, 17, were allegedly shot to death by their father Yaser, in an apparent “honor killing.” Amina had been accepted to Texas A&M University, and was planning to become a doctor.

    Their father was enraged because the two girls had boyfriends.

    Shortly after the murders, the girls’ aunt, Gail Gartrell, told reporters, “This was an honor killing.” She said that Yaser Said had been physically abusing the girls, and upon discovering the pair had boyfriends, he had threatened to kill them. Their mother took the girls and ran. “She ran with them,” said Gartrell, “because she knew he would carry out the threat.”

    Yaser Said is still at large.

    In 2005, a Kuwaiti man confessed to the murder of his own teen aged daughter, he believed that the girl was having sex. The father, Adnan Enezi, had just returned from a pilgrimage to Mecca, the day he killed his daughter.

    He tied and blindfolded 14-year-old Haifa, then slit her throat. He did this in front of her two brothers and one sister. As it turned out, the girl was in fact still a virgin, as was determined in an autopsy.

    In 2003, a Jordanian man was sentenced to one year in prison, for the murder of his own sister. The young woman became pregnant as a result of being raped by a neighbor. Her family then decided that she must marry the rapist. Before the forced marriage could take place, word of the pregnancy spread throughout the community. The woman’s brother returned from a trip to slurs and jeers, his male friends were calling him the “brother of a slut.”

    According to the Jordan Times, the man was so angry with his sister over the fact that she had been raped and impregnated, he slipped into her room at night and strangled her with a telephone cord.

    The Jordanian paper published excerpts of the court’s rulings. They are as follows: “The victim’s actions were an unlawful and dangerous act that brought disgrace and shame to her family. He (the brother) could no longer control himself and became very angry. It does not matter that the defendant killed his sister hours after returning from Aqaba. He was still under the influence of extreme anger, which caused him to lose his ability because of the unlawful act committed by his sister.”

    In Muslim society, it is always the woman who is wrong…even when she has been raped!

    Until recently, the nation of Jordan did not bother to prosecute, nor even question a man who committed an “honor killing.” Though many are now put on trial, the sentence usually ranges from one month to one year.

    Can you imagine a man convicted of murdering his sister or daughter in the United States, receiving a one-month sentence? Even the most liberal among us would consider taking the law into their own hands. The murderer would not last a week after his release, and the judge would be chased from the bench. However, the “practitioners of peace” have a free hand to abuse and even kill their women.

    The Jordanian government passed legislation in order to reduce sentences for those convicted of “honor killings.” The law explains that leniency is recommended for acts committed in a “fit of rage,” which was brought on by an “unlawful action” by the murder victim.

    The nation of Jordan considers itself to be a moderate Muslim state.

    There are thousands of these so-called “honor killings” which take place in Muslim countries every year. The United Nations reports the annual number at 5,000. However, it is believed that most of them go unreported. Muslim women are brutalized daily by their own family members. However, this fact of life in the Islamic world is completely ignored by the liberal left in this country.

    You will never hear a spokeswoman from the National Organization for Women, nor from the ACLU speak about these atrocities.

    Those on the left, which includes this nation’s mainstream media often tell us that the majority of Muslims are good and decent people. I would like to know if the majority of Muslim women feel that they are living in decent societies. I would like to ask these women their opinion of a community and a religion which sanctions their torture and murder.

    Unfortunately, these women will never be allowed to speak.

    Below are 6 English versions of the Quran verse 4:34. This passage lays the foundation for wife beating. I provided all these to show their similarity. These translations are all from recognized scholars. I have corrected some archaic spelling. My comments are in [ ] type brackets.

Virtuous women are obedient, careful, during the husband’s absence, because God has of them been careful.
